While it will use the same platform, we can expect the next generation of Toyota’s entry-level sports cars to be significantly different from the BRZ.
The original Toyota 86 didn’t just share the platform of the original Subaru BRZ – it was in the Essentially the same car except for a slightly redesigned front bumper and a different badge. While the next generation of 86 will continue to share the architecture of the new BRZ, this latest report suggests the two cars will be a little less identical to the powertrain.
Japanese-language website Best Car cites anonymous sources, claiming President Akio Toyoda has issued an edict to 86 engineers to distinguish it from the BRZ, which is delaying the development of the car.
As before, we expect the 86 to get unique front and rear fairings, but share the overall proportions of the BRZ. It was to continue to use the new BRZ’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. According to Best Car, it is the driving dynamics that receive the most toyotification, with changes to the engine tuning, transmission and suspension.
Toyota was mom on the news, and rumors suggest we may not see the next-gen ’86 debut until next year. In any case, we are pleased that it is more than just a BRZ copy. More unique sports cars on the market are always a good thing.
