The Maryland Terrapins seem to play some of their best basketball games on the street, having won victories in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota in the past 30 days. They’ll try to replicate that road warrior mentality at home against the Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday.
When these two teams met in Madison on December 28, Maryland’s 70-64 win was over the bottom line out of 133, but it took tons of late game fouling and a total of 13 points in the final minute of the game.
Both teams play a slow kind of basketball, with Wisconsin ranking 315 in the country and Maryland in ownership per game ranks 322. Since both teams are below the bottom 100 in terms of sales forced per possession, fast break points should be kept to a minimum while each team can carry out its methodological offense.
Both teams face shooting concerns. Maryland only makes 66.5 percent of its free throws against Division I opponents, and while Wisconsin makes 40.3 percent of its 3-pointers at home, the number drops to 31.2 percent on the road.
Wisconsin has 71 points or less in all five games that haven’t gone into overtime since losing to Maryland. The Terrapins have scored 70 points or less in seven of their last eight games against DI competitions.
Both teams are content to spend the full 30 seconds on the shot clock. Last month’s rematch of angry numbers features plenty of defense and one-off possessions. Both teams rank among the 25 percent of the country for an offensive rebound on missed shots that lead to an offensive rebound.
