Williams has announced that it will have closer technical relationships with Mercedes in Formula 1 starting in 2022 and will use more parts developed by the supplier.

Williams has been around since the start of the V6 hybrid era in 2014 powered by Mercedes, but has all other parts in-house and is proud of its independence.

After a takeover by Dorilton Capital in August and a change in management at Williams, the decision was made to move closer to Mercedes from next year .

Williams announced Tuesday that it « has expanded its technical collaboration with Mercedes to include the supply of certain transferable components from 2022. » Under the deal, Williams will use Mercedes transmissions and related hydraulic components, two parts that were always built in-house.

« The strengthened partnership with Mercedes will enable Williams to develop a more efficient construction in the long term Implementation and manufacturing processes in-house so that the team can focus its resources more effectively on other areas of performance, « says the statement.

» I am delighted that our great relationship with Mercedes extends beyond just supplying engines « said Simon Roberts, Williams team principal.

» Williams is an independent team, but Formula 1 is constantly evolving. As a team, we have to be agile to react to the current climate so that the team is in the best position to be competitive on the track. «

» This long-term agreement with Mercedes is a positive step and part of ours strategic goals for the future while continuing to maintain our design and manufacturing capabilities in-house. «

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff added, » We are excited to expand our technical collaboration with Williams through this new agreement.

« For Williams, it makes sense to purchase the integrated drive train after our units have been in operation since 2014, and for our team it makes sense, in terms of economies of scale, to supply another team according to the new rules.

» This is a project that we have been discussing with Williams for some time, and I am glad that we were able to make this expansion a reality. «

Williams has had young Mercedes driver George Russell since Used in F1 at the beginning of 2019 and is obliged to continue using its power units until 2025.

Teams are allowed to share certain unlisted parts with other teams, with existing relationships between Mercedes and Racing Point, Ferrari and Haas as well as Red Bull and AlphaTauri .
