For the third year in a row, the Seattle Seahawks are starting their hopeful Super Bowl run on Wild Card Weekend. The Seahawks will host the Los Angeles Rams for the second time in the last three weeks – and for the second time in the franchise’s playoff history – in Seattle to kick off the postseason.
The last time these two meet Teams met in the playoffs was in the 2004–05 season when the then-St. Louis Rams upset the Seahawks 27-20 at what was formerly Qwest Field. This year, the Rams beat the Seahawks in all three games they played against each other.
Since then, Seattle has become a post-season fortress. The Seahawks are currently enjoying a 10-game home winning streak. Of course, the Rams know how to make 10-game winning streaks for the Seahawks. From 2005 to 2014, the Rams could not record a victory in Seattle until the 11th game in 2015. (Angrily knock on wood.)
The Rams are facing good injury news and some unsafe news. The good news is that you will be getting some key contributors back. Broad recipient Cooper Kupp, who caused significant trouble for the Seahawks in Week 16, has been removed from the Reserve / COVID-19 list. Los Angeles will also welcome back 39-year-old left winger Andrew Whitworth, who has miraculously recovered from what appeared to be a seasonal knee injury.
Jared Goff broke his thumb on his throwing hand at the Seahawks, causing he missed the Rams’ regular season finale. In his place was John Wolford, who had a decent game in Los Angeles’ 18-7 win over the Cardinals.
Initial reports earlier this week said it would be tough for Goff just 12 days after his Play thumb surgery. Even though Goff has been spotted training and the week’s practice reports say he’s feeling « fine », it still seems like Goff’s game will be a long way.
Even if Goff does manage to play, is It’s not hard to assume the thumb injury is playing a role in some way.
If Goff can’t play, or if it’s clear his thumb is affecting his performance, the Rams will likely turn to Wolford again, the 231 yards passed and hurried another 56. Wolford had no touchdowns, but had an interception on his first run.
Regardless of who is quarterback, the Rams offensive has trouble moving the ball and scoring points. Los Angeles was kept out of the end zone for the first time in a row under Sean McVay, scoring only 18 attack points on six field goals. Now there’s going to be an improved defense in Seattle that appears to have cracked the Rams’ offensive code.
Sean McVay’s team hasn’t found the end zone in two weeks, but I don’t expect him to make it three if Jared Goff plays. Goff may not be a dynamic player, but he’s certainly still a starting quarterback in the NFL, and McVay is far too good a coach not to get touchdowns again.
However, when it’s Wolford who has to play , The Seahawks have a significant advantage.
As for the offense of the Seahawks, they have been in the game for almost two months, but they manage to come to life late in clutch moments. I expect more of the same from them on Saturday, unless Goff or Wolford offer Russell Wilson and Co. a favorable field position with timely sales.
