In a game where Stephen Curry had his worst shooting performance in his career, his supporting cast was reinforced and the Warriors defeated the Toronto Raptors between 106 and 105 on Sunday night at the Chase Center.

Curry, who came into the night as the NBA’s second top scorer, was the target of an aggressive Raptors defense that chased, hit, and bleeded the two-time MVP. He finished 2-of-16 with just 11 points (1-of-10 from 3-point range), while Damion Lee’s free throws earned the Warriors (6-4) victory 4.3 seconds ahead.
Chased by Fred VanVleet, a selection of long defenders and a box-and-1 defense, Curry made his first shot of the game but then missed his next 13 attempts on goal until he scored a key 3 at the end of the fourth quarter Pointer scored.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – JANUARY 10: Stephen Curry (30) of the Golden State Warriors prepares for the third quarter at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif. On Sunday On January 10, 2021, to take a free throw against the Toronto Raptors (Nhat V. Meyer / Bay Area News Group)

All the attention given Curry opened up opportunities for his teammates as six others finished in double digits. Andrew Wiggins finished with 17 points and four assists, Eric Paschall (15 points) and Lee (13 points) contributed from the bench and Draymond Green recorded 10 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Brad Wanamaker’s 2-pointer gave the Warriors a 16-point lead in the middle of the second quarter.

But the Raptors (2-7) made a run in the second half and Kyle Lowry scored 16 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter when the Raptors hit back and were four points ahead of 2:58.

At this point, Curry made his first shot since the opening phase – a 3-pointer to reduce the new deficit to one. Curry helped create a potential game-winning chance when he defended striker Pascal Siakam in the Raptors’ penultimate possession, forcing Siakam to take a hard shot that was blocked by Kent Bazemore.

7.7 seconds left, Lee brought the ball to Curry, who returned to Lee after being inundated by Toronto’s defense. Lee rose for a 3-point try and was fouled before the shot, putting him on the line for game-winning free throws. Siakam’s start-up help for the medium-distance sweater was not available.

For a Warriors team that previously lost every game this season in which Curry failed to score 30 points, this win is an important touch point and proves that they can win games if their top players get through a sold out defense is restricted to stop him.

Next, the Warriors will finish this homestand on Tuesday with seven games against the Pacers.
