Immortal rugby player Wally Lewis has confirmed the end of his 36-year marriage to wife Jacqui.
The Queensland Origin Legend revealed the breakup in a statement from Channel 9, where he works as a sports host.
« Wally and Jacqui Lewis split last year after 36 years of marriage. It was a difficult time for everyone in the family and they are still working on the details of the separation, » the statement said.
Lewis, 61, who shares three children – Mitchell, Lincoln, and Jamie-Lee – with Jacqui admitted the split had put a heavy strain on his family. He’s in a new relationship now.
« This is a deeply personal matter that we do not want to discuss publicly, but I would like to acknowledge the pain and excitement my family has been through since Jacqui and I split up last year. I hope that as we go along Time to rebuild our relationships and get on with life, « said Lewis.
« I will confirm that I am in a different relationship now and just ask the media to respect our privacy. »
In his autobiography, My Life, last year, he revealed how Jacqui had helped him with his diagnosis of epilepsy – a condition he kept a secret from 1987 to 2006 when he had a seizure on Nine News.
Lewis finally had four hours of surgery in 2007, but wrote that he and Jacqui did not expect the depression that followed.
Lewis admitted he was on the verge of suicide at his Brisbane home when his wife went to the stores.
“Another time I went to the pontoon on the canal in the back of the house and wondered if I should jump in,” he says. « The thought was actually there that day … (Jacqui) never left me alone after that. »
Mitch Lewis, who works as the Nova radio host, recently announced that he will be adding a daughter to his boy clan.
He and his wife Sarah have three sons and tears in their eyes when their doctor called and said they had a baby girl.
