Jaipur: Mumbai’s captain Prithvi Shaw became the top single player in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 50-over national championship on Thursday when he unbeaten shattered 227 of just 152 balls to help Mumbai beat Puducherry in his elite game of Group D by beating 233 runs.
The 21-year-old Shaw, who played in five Tests and five ODIs, broke the previous record of the highest individual ranking of Sanju Samson (212 not against Goa in 2019).
This was the first List-A-double for Shaw that he got in 142 balls. Shaw hammered 31 fours and five sixs during his attack. He was also the eighth Indian to score a double hundred on List A.
This was also Prithvi’s second century of the tournament after his unbeaten 105 in the lung opener against Delhi.
This was also the highest scoring for a World A list cricket captain after the youngster won the undefeated 222 from Graeme Pollock against Border in East London.
Puducherry’s decision to send Mumbai to bat failed when Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav (133 of 58 balls) played bowling at Sawai Mansingh Stadium and a Mammoth 457 / 4 posted.
Leg spinner Prashant Solanki (5/48) then opted for a fiver when Mumbai pounded Puducherry for 224 to claim his third trot win.
Tiny right-handed Shaw tore a listless Puducherry attack apart, which included the 36-year-old former Indian player Pankaj Singh (2/79) and his 41-year-old colleagues Santha Moorthy (0/92) and Sagar Trivedi (1) / 99) as well as the 34-year-old spinner on the left arm Sagar Udeshi (0/81).
Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) added 58 runs for the first wicket that laid the foundation. After Jaiswal was released, Shaw found a capable partner in Aditya Tare (56, 7×4) when the duo sewed a 153-run stand for the second wicket. Tare played the perfect second fiddle for Shaw.
Suryakumar, who came in fourth, was in his elements, hitting 22 fours and four sixs. He and Shaw added 201 runs for the third wicket stand and helped Mumbai break the 400-run mark.
Puducherry was never in the chase as Solanki ran through their middle and lower order and from the Pacers Shardul Thakur (2/31) and Tushar Deshpande (2/53) received excellent support.
Skipper Damodaran Rohit scored the most goals for Puducherry with 63, but it was Mumbai that dominated the game throughout.
Mumbai has also collected points when they were humiliated by Puducherry in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on home soil.

Maharashtra 277/6 (Kedar Jadav 101 not out, Yash Nahar 55; Ravi Bishnoi 3/55, Aniket Choudhary 1/48) defeated Rajasthan 233 (Mahipal Lomror 86, Salman Khan 68; Pradeep Dadhe 4/48 , Mukesh Choudhary 2/33)) by 44 runs.
Himachal 251/8 (Nikhil Gangta 100 not off, Ayush Jamwal 34; Kulwant Kherjroliya 2/30, Simarjeet Singh 2/47) lost against Delhi 252/4 (Kshitiz Sharma 67 not out, Lalit Yadav 52 not out; Mayank Dagar 2/40) out of six wickets.
