Forecaster Alex Majchrowski said storms would sweep the west southeast throughout the day before reaching the coast later in the afternoon or early evening.

The Bureau warned that severe storms are likely for inland areas from Warwick to Burnett and for regions between Wide Bay and the New South Wales border.

« We saw noxious winds and large hailstones in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset region well into the early afternoon, » Majchrowski said.

Whether the heavy rain, hail and damaging winds hit Brisbane « really depends on whether these storms are severe by the time they reach the coast, » Majchrowski said.

« We may not see falls as severe as in the west, » said Majchrowski.

For Brisbane, falls of up to 25mm are expected this afternoon, while areas in the « west southeast » are expected to rain more than 40mm.

« The risk of severe thunderstorms with heavy rains, which can lead to flash floods, can persist overnight until early Tuesday morning, » the Bureau of Meteorology said in a tweet.

North Queenslanders have been warned of potential flash floods and « destructive gusts of wind … strong enough to topple trees and power lines » as tropical cyclone Kimi continues to build.
