In a weekday foulfest, Brad Davison led the Badgers to an 11-point win over the Rams.

After their game against Louisville was postponed for the Cardinals due to COVID-19 complications, the Wisconsin Badgers (4-1, 0-0, B1G) quickly prepared a game with the Rhode Island Rams (3-3, 0 -0 A-10) to take his place.

Outside of Davison, the rest of the Badgers struggled to shoot off the field in the final stages of the first half, save for a monster dipped in by Micah Potter.

At halftime, Wisconsin had a 17-point lead of 33-16, with Davison leaving the entire Rhode Island team behind at break. Rhode Island fought off the field and only shot 25. 9% and 0 of 8 from the three-point range.

Early in the second half, Rhode Island got off to a strong start, firing five of its first seven shots to take the lead in Wisconsin. The Badgers were able to keep things moving, however, as they took four of their first six shots to give Wisconsin a 45-28 lead at 15:22.

After that break in action, Jonathan Davis put together a really nice sequence with a block (his third game at the time) and an inverted layup at the other end of the transition as Wisconsin increased the gap to 22. Points.

The Wisconsin defense was excellent in the first half. The Badgers communicated very well and locked up the inside, a room that Rhode Island generally attacks with their explosive guards.

In the second half, Rhode Island was able to get things going despite over 60% shooting from the field. For a Rams team that came into the game averaging 79 points per game, a combined team effort by the Badgers not only held Fatts Russell in check, but held the entire team for most of the game.

Wisconsin played relatively good defense all season, but the Badgers were much better at avoiding stupid fouls in the first half, a statistic that ultimately made them fail against Marquette in the previous game. Wisconsin was a little more undisciplined in the second half, which resulted in Rhode Island working its way into the bonus in the middle of the half, but ultimately the performance was an improvement over a solid team.

In a potentially much tougher game against Louisville and a stacked Big Ten conference, the Wisconsin defenses must reflect the first half if they are to reach their full potential.

Wisconsin always seemed to have an answer when the Rams were running, and that’s traditionally a strong sign of a good team. Rhode Island came back into play due to a sloppy Badgers game in the second half at either end of the court and an extended drought, but this was a good way for Wisconsin to recover from the Marquette loss.

The Badgers will have to keep working on some of the fouling issues that continue to crop up (Reuvers, Ford and Wahl with four end-game fouls each), but overall briefly defeating a solid Atlantic 10 team Note should not be discounted.

Next up, Wisconsin and Louisville are trying to reschedule their game for this coming Sunday as part of the Big Ten / ACC Challenge. If this game cannot be played this weekend, the Badgers will be on Wednesday the 16th. December, back on the field against North Iowa. TV information has yet to be released for this competition.
