. . World News – USA – USA vs. . Finland: Arthur Kaliyev’s goal by 76 seconds brings the Americans to the gold medal showdown against Canada

. . It will be U. S.. . and Canada for gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2021

. .

Like the first semi-final of the Junior World Championship on Monday, when Canada and Russia fought for a place in the game for the gold medal. Finland is a rivalry with history. Two years ago the Finns defeated the Americans in the gold medal game when Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko scored the starting goal 1:26. Last year Finland put up a ban to send the Americans home in the quarter-finals and destroy their hopes for a fifth straight year with a medal.

Eight players return from last year’s squad for the U.. S.. . (Bobby Brink, Cole Caufield, Arthur Kaliyev, Spencer Knight, Alex Turcotte, Dustin Wolf, Cam York and Trevor Zegras) while Knight was one of three goalkeepers in 2019. Five players will return to Finland from 2020 (Santeri Hatakka, Ville Heinola, Mikko Kokkonen, Kari Piiroinen and Aku Raty). Heinola and Anton Lundell, who dropped out due to injury last year, also won gold two years ago.

« I would imagine that the guys who played in the tournament last year could have a chip on their shoulder. And we hope that we can use that to our advantage, « said US head coach Nick Leaman on Monday afternoon.

The USA come into play after a quarter-final victory against Slovakia on Saturday evening. While the final score was 5-2, it was close before John Farinacci scored his second goal of the game, a beauty of a backhand wraparound, in the third. Matthew Beniers iced it up with an empty nice guy.

Trevor Zegras threw in two assists and took the lead from Canada’s Dylan Cozens with 15 points (Cozens overtook him in the Canadian semi-final win on Monday). . This sum also moves him up the U. S.. . Singles tournament list that connects him with Hall of Famer Mike Modano (1989). Zegras now has nine assists, matching his number (and total points) from last year, putting him one point behind Jeremy Roenick, making him second on USA Hockey’s World Juniors career scoreboard.

Knight was firmly in the net again when he stoned the Slovaks from the slot with an uncomfortable number of shots. The first goal of the Slovaks by Matej Kaslik towards the end of the second half ended the series of exclusions for the Americans with a junior world record of 218: 53. Knight and Dustin Wolf connected with a goalkeeper on the net for 245:07 of the shutout time. Knight will be among the tubes for the U again. S.. . against Finland.

Patrick Moynihan is also back after missing his second game in a row on Saturday with an injury. The prospect of Devils had a late, high (and, as many would say, dirty) hit against Austria (the player was banned for the hit two games) and was thrown around against the Czechs. He will be a welcome addition to the line-up as the Americans face a strong Finnish team, that of Lundell (seven points) and an impressive core of Topi Niemela (a Leafs prospect with seven points), Jets prospect Heinola and Hatakka is cited. The Americans beat Finland 3-2 in their singles tournament vote.

« I don’t think it’s a different team, » said Leaman, who mentioned that his team had seen the New Year’s Eve Canada-Finland game and found Canada play a similar style to the Americans. « I definitely went back and watched this game [Sunday] and I saw some of their other games, but the teams grow as the tournament goes on. You play four games in seven days and you get better. hopefully your weaknesses won’t be quite as weak. «

In this exhibition game, the teams traded powerplay goals before Cole Caufield scored two goals. Finland face Scandinavian rivals Sweden in this match after beating Scandinavian rivals Sweden in the last minute.

« They are an annoying team, » Leaman said. « You stay here. They have a very good power game, they have the second best power game in the tournament [the US is No.. 1]. So I think the discipline of our team will be very important. I think managing the puck will be important. I think getting them to play in their zone as much as possible will be important. «

Sporting News has it all under control as the US snatch a spot in the gold medal game against Canada.

11:55 p. m. – 13. 3 more seconds. The Finns win the draw, but they leave the zone.

11:54 p. m – Matthew Boldy with a big block against Ville Heinola who fires a missile from the start.

11:52 p. m. – GOAL . It’s an arty party! With only 1:16 left on the clock, Arthur Kaliyev gets the puck in the high slot, pivots and scores. USA leads 4-3.

11:46 p. m. – PP GOAL. Roni Hirvonen hits the puck in front of the front door and hits it. Game tie at 3-3.

11:45 p. m. – Henry Thrun tries to clarify, but it goes to the stands. Finland gets a power game. Great moment in this game.

11:35 p. m – The energetic line of Brink, Farinacci and Berard comes close right after giving up the gate.

11:26 p. m. – Cole Caufield tries to crush it but instead crushes it over the glass and sits down for two. Nate Leaman isn’t happy knowing Finland’s power play is good.

11:22 p. m. – Big fight ahead of Spencer Knight but he’s got everything under control as his defense helps make the final clear. Finland looks early.

11:19 p. m. – Last frame. Two-goal game. Cole Caufield has a good chance in less than 15 seconds.

11:00 p. m. – The Americans control the game for the last two minutes and thereafter, but cannot add any more.

10:53 p. m. – GOAL. The Finns lose sight of John Farinacci completely and he sneaks behind the defense, breaks in and hits. USA leads 2-1.

10:51 p. m. – Cole Caufield and Trevor Zegras in a 2-on-1 game, but don’t even get a shot because the Caufield pass is blocked.

10:50 p. m. – Matthew Boldy types a point just wide of the gate. Good pressure from the U. . S.. . after the penalty shootout.

10:49 p. m. – Spencer Knight reads the piece so well and stops a one-timer from Kasper Puutio’s left circle.

10:46 p. m. – Another American punishment. Finland is 1: 2 with the man advantage. U. . S.. . Head coach Nate Leaman wanted his boys to be disciplined and that hasn’t happened yet.

10:43 p. m. – John Farinacci manages a 2-on-1, but his shot from the left circle is stopped by the edge of Kari Piiroinen’s back arm. Great shot from Farinacci.

10:35 p. m. – Americans with a good D like the Finns. Then the U. . S.. . goes in the other direction and again good defense against the Finns. The teams also acted without calls.

10:30 p. m. – Middle frame is a lot. The USA beat their opponents 13: 4 in the second phase of the tournament.

10:11 p. m. – Penalty killed, but seconds later Spencer Knight saves a pad and then a blocker on a floater.

10:03 p. m. – PP GOAL. And just like that, it’s a tie. What a nice passing game: Ville Heinola to Anton Lundell to Kasper Simontaival, who gets into the empty net because Spencer Knight can’t get over. Game draw 1-1.

10:02 p. m. – Not a good time to be punished. Sam Colangelo requested a cut. Finland has a great power game.

10 p. m. – GOAL. Arthur Kaliyev brings the puck forward and Alex Turcotte manages to overtake the defender to bury him past Kari Piiroinen, who was slightly out of position. USA leads 1-0.

9:59 p. m. – Americans break out and Alex Turcotte hits the trailer in the slot, but the shot is stopped.

9:47 p. m. – Six minutes later, the Finns have five shots at the two Americans.

9:38 p. m. – Just 26 seconds later, Matthew Beniers steals the puck and Cole Caufield has a direct chance. Like Canada is the U. . S.. . comes out hard.
