World News – USA – The weight of being a starter isn’t too great for Penn State Tight End Brenton Strange

Like many freshmen, Brenton Strange dealt with weight issues during his freshman year at Penn State.

When Strange arrived at Penn State in 2019 as a total newcomer, he weighed « 210.215 » pounds by his estimate.

« I don’t think I really had anything to eat, » Strange said during a video conference call with the media on Wednesday. “But I just had to eat more than I was at home. I would skip meals a lot because I wasn’t hungry. I wouldn’t have a lot of lunch, I would have a lot of breakfast. Just things like that. Staying consistent and always eating calories definitely made a difference to me. ”

« When I go home and be around family and other things, you eat for two. It’s what I have to do to keep this weight on top of myself. ”

Strange’s dimensions weren’t the only thing that changed for him when he arrived in Penn State. His position too.

A broad receiver and linebacker in Parkersburg (W. . Va. ) High School, Strange is relatively new to the narrow-end role.

« It was great for me to definitely get close to high school and make the transition to college, » he said. « I really didn’t know how to run block. … I would do too much sometimes. I really had to lock myself in and learn what to do, how to do. You know my what, you know my why, you know my how. Once I learned this, it got a lot easier for me and I felt like I could play at full speed. ”

Today, barely two years after his college career and a new position, Strange is at the beginning as Penn State, thanks in part to the absence of Pat Freiermuth, an All-American who will miss the rest of the season because of an unknown Injury he sustained earlier this month.

Strange’s first game as a starter was Saturday with a 41:21 loss to Iowa at Beaver Stadium. He had three receptions for 38 yards and one touchdown. He will be on the grid when Penn State trips to Michigan on Saturday lunchtime.

« I was definitely injured because Pat is family to me, » said Strange, who has six receptions for 61 yards this season. “Obviously I was nervous for a while. But I knew I had prepared for it. I’ve been preparing for this all my life. As soon as the first game was over, my nerves kind of went away. ”

Given his relative inexperience in this position, Strange admitted that his close-end trust came only a few months ago.

« I would definitely say this year at camp, » said Strange. “I felt like I had grown a lot as a player and as a person. Gained much more knowledge about the soccer game. I just knew how to play the tight end position much better. And I knew what to look out for in the running game, the passing game. Probably this summer. ”

If he really wants to replace Freiermuth, Strange, now a Redshirt novice, realizes that he has to be present on and off the field.

« I definitely feel like I have to take on the role of a leader in our space now, especially that I’m the oldest (close end) and not counting (second year Zack Kuntz), » said Strange. “Set a good example to the young people and whatever they need, me and Kuntz will be there to help them. ”
