FOXBORO â ???? After MLS competition was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, the New England Revolution never knew they would re-enter the field, whether or not they landed in the MLS Eastern Conference championship game.

There is no consolation to stepping out of a field that the Columbus Crew cannot beat and advance to the MLS Cup.

« We made progress last year, we made progress this year, » New England coach Bruce Arena said. I think we want to continue. In the low season.

« We want to get two or three players who can consolidate our first 11, » said Arena, the most successful (35) playoff coach in MLS history, after New England suffered a 1-0 defeat. We have to get a little better there. Technically, we’re not as good as we need to be. We have to bring in some better players to help us on the offensive. And we can use help in other positions. We’ll do our best to make our roster a little bit better. â ????

Veteran Revolution defender and team captain Andrew Farrell said that amidst the winning culture of the Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics, a benchmark is to be competitive, but it’s more important to rise to championships.

« We won three games that not many people let us win, » Farrell said. So, this (pandemic) year in particular, it was a crazy year for everyone, not just us, but it was difficult to still do sports year.

« Boston fans and the city of Boston loves to win, » added Farrell. â € œIf you win, people will start talking about you. If you use the resources like the Krafts and include people like Carles (Gil) and Adam (Buksa) and Gustavo (Bou) the team will do well. We’re in a good place right now.

« ???? Of course we have to come back next year and keep looking at these games and playing meaningful games to keep the spotlight. « . Hopefully we can have a lot of home games and a lot of our fans there next year. â ????

New England only scored 10 shots in the game, only four on goal, and received four corners. There was pressure, just not enough sustained pressure, even with 54 percent possession.

Bou scored the team’s top four shots while Buksa had three. Gil completed 42 of 53 attempts in midfield with his 75 ball touches. The trio of Revolution « designated players » played as a trio for the fifth game in a row, scoring six of New England’s seven goals in the postseason.

« I think last year when we went to Atlanta and lost 1-0 in the first round, but we were probably the better team that day, » New England goalkeeper Matt Turner said. We had a lot of hope for 2020.

« Obviously it’s been a challenging year for everyone, not just soccer players. « . But we stuck together. I thought we didn’t do our best (against Columbus). So this is disappointing. But at the end of the day, I’ll take some time to think. I’m still a little emotional right now because it hurts to lose and to lose when you were this close to winning a championship. â ????

Turner, who finished second in the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year poll, made the top six saves in the playoff career, 16 in all of the four postseason games. Turner’s three playoff wins matched the club record of Bobby Shuttleworth (2014) and Adin Brown (2002). .

« I think we’re on the right track, » Turner said New England is a contender every year. If you see the last few games we played, they were good teams we played against. Beat Philly in Philly, beat Orlando in Orlando, and give Columbus a really good bang for the buck here in Columbus until the final whistle.

« We’re going to have higher standards from the start next year, » added Turner. « We will not be able to accept mediocrity. « . I think people are now seeing the culture and what it takes to be successful in this league and to win and achieve the ultimate goal, the MLS Cup. I imagine preseason will be very intense and hopefully we can start the year off with a strong foot instead of picking up steam on the track. â ????

During Sunday’s game, Tajon Buchanan recorded four tackles, three clears and one interception on his fourth straight start on the right. Rookie defender Henry Kessler had the Revolution’s best results at intervals (6) and interceptions (4) during the game, successfully completing 36 of 44 passes in a 90-minute shift. Kelyn Rowe is 12 years old. Post-season appearance and eclipsed 700 career minutes played in the MLS Cup playoffs while « native » player Justin Rennicks of South Hamilton, Mass. won four of five duels in his short five minutes, his third appearance after the season.

« We saw some young people who played really well, » Farrell said. Boys like Kessler and Tajon (Buchanan) and DeJuan (Jones) all had really good season ends. In another year Bruce (Arena) will give them a really good boost for our team. And I’m sure there will be people who won’t be here anymore. But the team is in good hands.

â ???? I think we have a few more pieces to add and we can all get better.

« Part of the sport, part of the team under Bruce ([Arena]), obviously this team is not going to look like it (in 2021). « a ???? said Farrell. « We’re disappointed because we didn’t win, didn’t bring any hardware to our club. « . We are obviously disappointed that we cannot play in the final. â ????

Arena had the same starting XI in Columbus as in the two previous games against Philadelphia and Orlando.

« Just a couple of tackles and a couple of shots on goal and we could be in the MLS Cup final, » Farrell said as New England converted 81 percent of its passes. Bruce (Arena) asked us last night if we would play in the Eastern Conference final, one step away from the MLS Cup. Would you believe me

« We have come a long way. « . It can be said that his (Arenas) winning mentality was contagious within the organization. And the Krafts love to win too. This is obviously a great run and we’re glad we made it this far, but Bruce isn’t here to lose in the Eastern Conference final. He is here to win trophies. â ????
