LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The NCAA banned Nebraska’s Derrick Walker for the first 16 games of the season for a rule violation while he was in Tennessee in 2018-19.

The Nebraska Sports Department announced this on Wednesday just before the Cornhuskers kick off against McNeese State.

The 6-foot-8,232-pound junior forward only played limited minutes for the Volunteers team that made it to the NCAA regional semi-finals in 2018-19. Walker was out under transfer rules in Nebraska last season.

« Since arriving in Nebraska, Derrick Walker has been phenomenal in accepting a mistake he made before he arrived, » said coach Fred Hoiberg. “He was transparent throughout the recruiting process and acknowledged his mistake. In return, we confidently told him that we would support him and fight for him. ”

The 16-game ban is based on a normal regular season for 31 games. Hoiberg said he was hoping the suspension would reflect half of a shortened 2020-21 season that is said to include 27 games.
