Gorakhpur (UP), 23. December: A court in Gorakhpur Sessions sentenced the Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI) operator Tariq to life imprisonment in connection with the serial explosions that rocked the city in 2007.
It is the fourth case that Qasmi has been sentenced to life imprisonment. He is currently being held in the Barabanki District Prison.
Governing Council SP Narayan Singh said: “The judge for additional districts and meetings, Narendra Kumar Singh, has awarded Qasmi life imprisonment in the case of the serial explosions. A total of 23 prosecutor’s witnesses were investigated, seven of whom became hostile. ”
The then government of the Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, filed an application with the court in 2013 to withdraw the explosion in Gorakhpur, which was rejected.
On 22. May 2007 Gorakhpur was struck by three explosions in five minutes, injuring six people. The police investigation revealed that the explosions were carried out by extremist outfits, Indian Mujahideen and HuJI.
The UP Police Special Task Force arrested Qasmi and another suspected HuJI agent, Khalid Mujahid, of Jaunpur near Barabanki Railway Station on Jan.. December 2007 and allegedly confiscated 1. 25 kg RDX, six detonators, three cell phones and two SIM cards from them.
Aside from the Gorakhpur case, the police also booked Khalid and Qasmi in the Lucknow and Faizabad court booby cases. The explosions were on Jan.. Occurred November 2007.
Khalid died in 2013 when police took him from Lucknow District Prison to Faizabad.
During their investigation into the Gorakhpur case, police later discovered the involvement of alleged IM agents Salman alias Chottu, Saif and Mirza Shadab Baig.
Saif and Salman are currently in jail. The district police, after court approval, took down one of Baig’s property because he had fled.
