The Atlanta Hawks competed Monday night at State Farm Arena as their second game in a three-game home track against the New York Knicks.

The Hawks (4-3) lost their second game in a row when they lost to the Knicks (4-3) by 113-108 and stalled late, similar to Saturday’s game against. the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The injury report for Atlanta was long before this competition. The only two players not excluded were Kevin Huerter and Rajon Rondo, with the former being the only one on the report to play in that game. Rajon Rondo has missed the last three games with knee pain.

The game started with a lot of back and forth points, and neither team was able to build a steady lead.

The Hawks were only 33% off the field for the first eight minutes of play – a drag from their poor shooting range in the second half of Saturday’s loss to the Cavaliers.

Atlanta was in the hole after the Knicks ran a 7-0 run of just under two minutes. The Knicks leadership grew to 24-14 during this time. That forced the Hawks to take a break. The Hawks had no answer for Julius Randle when he shot from the outside and withheld players in the suit.

Trae Young came out of the aforementioned break and brought his team to life. He led Atlanta to finish the last four minutes of the first quarter and beat the Knicks 15-7. The first quarter ended with an increase in kinks between 31 and 29.

There were a total of nine leadership changes in the first quarter, and Young led the Hawks with 12 points, less than 67% for the period.

The Hawks played better as the second quarter wore off. Young continued to engage the rest of the team and show off his playful skills.

Atlanta played a much faster, more exciting style of basketball in the second quarter, and of course it’s even more fun to watch Clint Capela and John Collins throw dunks.

Collins had a much better second quarter, ending at halftime with 14 points and six rebounds. Young added 17 points of his own along with seven assists and six free throws.

The Hawks ran a 15: 4 run at the end of the quarter to secure a 58: 54 lead at halftime and better stop Randle. Randle led all scorers with 18 points at halftime. The Hawks just didn’t have a great answer for him and switched various players to him.

The Hawks started the third quarter with a 15-6 run in the first 3:30 lead and a 73:60 lead. Young scored or assisted on five of the six baskets during this time. He got 10 assists with 8:52 in the third period – good for his third straight double.

Your lead was stable for a while, but the Knicks were working their way back into it. The Knicks ended the last two minutes of the third with a 10-4 win over the Hawks. Kevin Knox hit a 3-pointer on the buzzer to cut Atlanta’s lead to four.

At the end of the third quarter, the score was between 88 and 84 in favor of the Hawks. This is the second game in a row that the Hawks lost their double-digit lead by the end of the third quarter. This was eerily similar to Saturday’s loss to the Cavaliers, where the Hawks’ lead was reduced when Young was on the bench at the end of the third half.

The Knicks continued their improved game to kick off the fourth quarter. They took the lead back from the Hawks at 8:35 to get into the game.

The two teams traded buckets for most of the fourth quarter, but there was a notable two-minute drought for both teams, starting around the six-minute mark.

Young fouled Immanuel Quickley with a 3-point attempt late in the game and the Hawks couldn’t get the lead back from there.

Cam Reddish missed a key dunk and a 3-pointer that would have put the Hawks in a better position by the end of the game. He took three of the last four recordings of Atlanta. The Hawks eventually fell to the Knicks 113-108.

Randle and RJ Barrett were able to get the desired shots against the Hawks defense.

These are now two games in a row as the Hawks were unable to maintain the lead in the second half and finish the game strong. The Hawks immediately gave up a 15-point lead. While that’s not a good thing, it’s important to know how many players the Hawks missed in the line-up.

As usual, Young preceded the Hawks. He finished with 31 points and 14 assists. Collins had 18 points and 8 rebounds and De’Andre Hunter played well, rounding out the game with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Capela didn’t play late in the fourth quarter after trying to slow Randle down, but he ended the game with a solid stat. He put up 12 points and secured 12 rebounds in 31 minutes.

The Hawks are staying home Wednesday night to face the Charlotte Hornets. This is the first game in two consecutive games against Charlotte. They will try to get back to the profit column against a Charlotte team struggling with a 2-5 record.
