James Haskell has urged World Rugby to change his stance on trapped players as he wants to see more players take advantage of the opportunity Billy Burns offers on Saturday afternoon when the former England junior international benched for Ireland goes.

Burns spent his youth career with England’s U18 and U20 players before being selected to represent Ireland due to his Cork born grandfather and making his debut against Wales last weekend.

The 26-year-old avoided taking on Conquest status as England never represented the Saxons or the entire national team, but there is growing demand for eligibility reform.

Bristol Bears full-back Charles Piutau has expressed his desire to play against Tonga but is unable to after making 15 caps for New Zealand, the last of which he won in 2015.

In Great Britain, Steven Shingler was banned from playing for Scotland in 2012 after being banned from Wales at youth level. Englishman Nick Abendanon has not worn an international jersey since 2007 despite qualifying for South Africa. Holland and France according to the rules of residence.

With international status still at its peak in rugby, Haskell argues that it is time to rethink the status quo.

« Everyone plays sports to play at their best, and international level is the best, » said Haskell, who will be part of Channel 4’s live coverage of the Twickenham duel on Saturday. “If one team doesn’t want you, they play 100 percent for the other. ‘

‘I think it’s great, I’m excited that he [Billy Burns] has the opportunity to play international rugby.

‘I really believe that if you only have an internation or two for a team and are never going to play for them again, you should be able to turn that around and play.

Check out some of the All Blacks who are no longer playing for New Zealand and who could go back and play for Samoa, Tonga.

‘I think it should be changed and looked. It’s tactical stuff getting players to cap them and it doesn’t work and they’ll never be seen again. I think we should investigate and let people pick this up.

‘I know people who have played for Bahrain, in Dubai and in all these countries because they want to play international rugby and I really have no problem with that.

‘We don’t have Ronaldo – I don’t think it will make any difference if you allow people to interact. ‘

What will make a difference for Eddie Jones this weekend is the lack of a home crowd that is cheering England on at Twickenham.

It’s a factor Haskell believes will limit Saturday afternoon home advantage and the former Red Rose international hopes that lessons will be learned for the Six Nations early next year.

« At Twickenham we would normally have a home advantage but I think we can all agree that without the crowds, rugby is generally just a toilet, » he said.

‘It’s just a lifeless game with no crowd. If I was playing I would really be fighting without a crowd.

‘The opportunity to play for your country is an honor. It’s just a shame you can’t play in front of a large crowd because that’s part of the magic – that’s why you do it.

‘I think we should have had crowds sooner – as soon as they allowed people to go to pubs again. But I think the bureaucracy got in the way, and I don’t think much common sense has been applied to all of this.

‘We are in a situation where we probably won’t see the crowds for a while. I hope when we get out of lockdown we will understand the difference between outdoor and other areas. ‘
