SAN ANTONIO – Austin « Ammo » Williams was immeasurably more impressive on Saturday night than the last fight.
Houston Williams was the first opponent to beat Isiah Jones when he stopped the normally long-lived Detroit rider in the first round of his scheduled six-round middleweight match at Alamodome. The strong 160-pound prospectus injured Jones with a left hand 1:15 in the opening round and immediately pounced on Jones as soon as Jones got back on the ropes.
Williams (7-0, 6 KOs) gave his confused opponent heavy punches, including a combination of three blows to the body and another hard left tip. Referee Mark Calo-oy had no choice but to step between them and stop action at 1:29 of the first round on the Canelo Alvarez-Callum Smith map.
Williams stopped Mexico’s Esau Herrera in the fifth round of his last fight, but he worked intermittently to get rid of Herrera (19-12-1, 8 KOs). Herrera, 36, had been stopped in four of his last six fights before breaking on Jan.. October faced Williams in Mexico City.
26-year-old Jones (9-4, 3 KOs), who did not face Williams, has fought for the fourth time in the past six months.
