After folding 244 runs in the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah sacked two Australian openers Matthew Wade and Joe Burns and helped India reach dinner on the second day with greater confidence. While Bumrah deserved all the praise for giving India two breakthroughs, his error of judgment on the fence just before lunch time denied the team a crucial wicket from Marnus Labuschagne. The incident happened on the penultimate end of the first session when Shami made a brilliant short pitch delivery to Labuschagne. The Australian batsman pushed it straight to Bumrah on the fence with the fine legs. The ball went to Bumrah at a fairly catchable height, but the fast bowler, unsure where the ropes were jumbled, rolled over the fence, giving Australia an easy border.
India used to lose its innings with an overnight score of 233 for six and lost the last four wickets for only eleven runs. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc each added two wickets to their already impressive record on Day 2. Starc finished four wickets for 53 runs while Cummins finished three wickets.
India started bowling with Umesh Yadav instead of Mohammed Shami and that became a big talking point on social media. While Umesh was bowling the girl front to back, he couldn’t force the batsmen to play the balls as most of his supplies were far from the stump.
Shami, who came in as bowler for the first substitution, caused some problems for the Australian openers. He played in big tandem with Bumrah and Bumrah held Wade and Burn’s leg within two overs.
Australia was 35/2 at the end of the first session on day two. However, things could have been worse for the hosts if Bumrah had held onto that hook on the fence, but he would hope to make up for it with his bowling in the remaining sessions.
