The Lions are in Carolina today, battling the Panthers in hopes of improving their record . 500 a year to keep up with the teams in the NFC playoff picture. Detroit is pretty crazy with 15 players appearing in the injury report this week. This is life in the NFL, and the Lions will be looking for players to help them achieve a much-needed street win.
Rookie running back D’Andre Swift suffered a concussion this week and won’t be available today. That means more roles are expected from veterans Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson. Peterson had pushed Swift into the background for the past few weeks as the Lions showed back more of their dynamic rookie.
But without Swift, Peterson should do most of the early downs again, with Johnson still playing a role on the third down and possibly being involved in some early downs as well. The Lions will no doubt miss Swift, but Peterson and Johnson have shown that they are very capable of making games.
A thumb injury on the throwing hand is difficult for a quarterback. Of all five digits, it’s usually the one that quarterbacks hurt the most. It affects grip and speed, and pain tolerance could be a factor for Matthew Stafford too.
The good news is that Stafford has previously looked into injuries to his throwing hand. He knows what to expect. The fact that he got his hands on the practice and did some repetition this week is good for the Lions. He was classified as questionable for today’s matchup.
Stafford is about as tough as they are in the position. So if he can walk we just have to wait and see if the thumb and the bracket designed for his hand affect his ability to throw at all.
Carolina is dealing with an injury to quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who had limited exercise this week due to a knee injury and was rated questionable in Friday’s injury report today.
It would be a great loss to the Panthers if Bridgewater couldn’t keep up. He’s second in the NFL with 72 percent. Carolina head coach Matt Rhule referred to Bridgewater this week as the heart and soul of her offense.
If Bridgewater is playing, how much will the knee injury hinder him? He’s very good at moving around in his pocket and creating time for his weapons of skill to leave the field in the passing game. If the knee limits him at all in this regard, it will be a blow to the panthers’ offense.
No, quickly. No Kenny Golladay. No, Danny Amendola. Stafford is questionable. It’s a wacky crime in Detroit today, and Darrell Bevell and Co.. . will be looking for other players to take the opportunity to fill the void.
This could be a week with Lions really trying to get the ball to the T tight end. J. . Hockenson who only had two catches for 13 yards last week. Hockenson won against Indy and Minnesota with eight and ten target competitions. He was attacked four times last week. I expect him to be more involved today.
Broad recipient Marvin Jones Jr. . and Marvin Hall must continue to play well, and the team added veteran Mohamed Sanu from the training team to the active squad on Saturday. Sanu has 404 career receptions for 4th. 516 yards and 26 touchdowns. Lions head coach Matt Patricia said Sanu has been impressive in practice up to this point this week.
The Detroit Defense has received its fair share of criticism this year. Detroit’s 29. in goal defense (29. 7), 27. in general defense (400. 0), 30. against the barrel (141. 6) and 24. against the pass (258. 4). This unit dropped multiple leads in competitions this year and simply couldn’t find a way to consistently style the games in order to win more games.
If Detroit stopped the defensive run this year, they won games, so that’s Task No.. 1 today. That task was made a little easier when Carolina ruled Christian McCaffrey out. Next, big games need to be capped. Carolina is the top 5 in the NFL in explosive games and the top 6 in more than 20 yards. They have skill people who can get off the field and play games.
As explosive as Carolina was on the offensive at times, the Panthers have lost five times in a row and are also confronted with injuries on the offensive. This is an opportunity for the Lions’ defense to play consistently for 60 minutes fighting a crime in Detroit, and to play a big role in the return of that team . 500.
