The Texans have put David Johnson on the reserve / COVID-19 list, the team said. It is currently unclear whether Johnson tested positive for the coronavirus or whether he is in close contact with someone at high risk who did this.
It’s particularly bad timing for Johnson, who suffered a concussion during the week 9 win over the Jaguars in Houston, as a result landed on IR and only activated last week. In the Texans’ loss to the Colts on Sunday, Johnson carried the ball ten times for 44 yards and a score.
He collected a 4 for the season. 0 yards per carry averaging over 113 bags along with four TDs. He added 16 catches for 161 yards and a score through the air. Those are all decent numbers, but Texans (or at least since then-deposed HC / GM Bill O’Brien) were likely hoping for more when they bought Johnson this off-season in one of the most criticized deals of recent Arizona.
At this point, Johnson is unlikely to ever regain the all-pro form he demonstrated with the Cardinals in 2016. He turns 29 next week, and the injuries he’s sustained over the years seem to have taken their toll. He’s under contract until 2021, but his base salary is $ 7. 95 million and a roster bonus of $ 1. 05M look pretty steep at this point. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Texans trying to work out a wage cut with Johnson or simply let him go.
Duke Johnson will get most of the work in David Johnson’s place for this weekend’s matchup with the bears.
