World News – US – How a « supernatural » reflects the American spirit and the brutal darkness that lies beneath it

As the long show ends, its appeal continues across the partisan and cultural divide despite the rift between us

. .

In the beginning there was WB, there was UPN, and for five seasons before there was a well-known pop culture phenomenon like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That touching series jumped into UPN, ending in 2003.

After two seasons after « Buffy » left the air, « Supernatural » appeared on The WB, and became one of the few shows that made the move to The CW once WB and UPN merged.. The show’s road officially ends there Thursday evening, approaching a 15-year story.

Nevertheless, « Supernatural » has gained much less cultural credibility over the years despite the fact that the show ran twice as long as Buffy.. “Longevity does not guarantee cultural influence or appreciation, of course. Let’s also admit that Buffy is personally loved by a number of critics and scientists working today because she was the vanguard of the golden age of television, and she dared to carve a wacky cult movie in seven mega seasons and emotionally complex serial stories on a pair of small, low-rated broadcast networks.

But shows like « Supernatural » don’t last as long as you don’t talk about something essential about us, and what Sam and Dean Winchester represent (played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki). One of the main reasons « Supernatural » has continued as long as it has preserved the love for its diverse fan base for some of the same main reasons the American public has deemed the « Law & Order » immortal. Her status varies week to week, with a few episodes here and there dedicated to pushing her myths forward.

The difference is that in his world, the definitions of good and bad can be substituted. Hell is chaos, but Heaven is a heartless place that beings blindly manage to follow orders or defy them to take revenge on humanity. And in the cosmic stratigraphy system, humans rank low.

This makes the « Supernatural » series about fighting the oppressed of corrupt regimes as much as it is about hunters who face monsters.. And in the divine justice system, a troubled people are always represented by two men separate but of equal importance: religion, quarrels with a good sense of humor; Wissam, a rational university graduate. These are their stories.

The year that « Supernatural » ends also coincides with discussions about what it means to be American and confronting hard truths about the soul of this nation.. In their own way, this is exactly what Sam and Dean and their angelic ally Castiel (Misha Collins) and Nephilim Wing named Jack (Alexander Calvert) have been doing all along..

Sure, it’s the Friends’ series in the monster of the week format. But the main strength of this type of drama is how it harnesses the enduring power of the American story at its best and its worst, even as it subverts the popular notions that millions cling to, and insists it makes our culture great.. .

Keep in mind that the totally mundane reason for « Supernatural » to continue as long as it was is because many of her loyal fans grew up with Sam and Dean. This alone guarantees its TV cozy spot among Millennials and Xers for years to come.

« Supernatural » is a fan pursuit, the kind of presentation that’s easier to summarize than analysis, and with good reason.. On the most basic level, it caters to a common love of pop culture, while incorporating many gestures in classic movies and TV.. It is a horror and western series, and from time to time it simulates reality series, game programs, and other TV formats. One of her best episodes puts Sam and Dean inside the « Scooby-Doo » animation..

Sam and Dean also represent the archetypal American muscle in every detail, two men in flannel paddling through the highways of America in their father’s 1967 Chevy Impala blasting hard rock. . Even their CVs are mainly American, as they inherited the family business. In their case, this happens to be a disposition of Satan.

Unlike Buffy Summers, « superheroes » aren’t underestimated when they enter the room. On the contrary, Winchesters are white American masculine models, played by aged heart-wrenching actors with their fans.. In fact, there is no way to get past just how whitish this show is or the noticeable color blindness that plays, once again, a central tenet of American story..

So, too, is the classic pairing of minds and strength: Dean rarely sees a situation that cannot be solved with firepower and fist. Sam tried to escape from his roots and attended Stanford University. He would have gone to law school if Fate and Hell hadn’t interfered, derailing his plans by pinning his girlfriend to the ceiling while she was cremated, the same way demons killed Mama Winchester. They both have parental issues early in the series and compete for their mother’s feelings after she resurrects in a later season. . Family: Many.

The author of the series « Supernatural » Eric Kripke was originally formed as a drama about those emotional struggles, in much the same way that Buffy represents an extended metaphor for the horror of adolescence and early adulthood.. Over a decade and a half of development, the development of « Supernatural » has redefined what it means to be a family, as the series turned into a piece of music with Sam and Dean joined by Castiel and Jack.

It is by no means a flawless or consistent presentation in quality. Entire seasons can be skipped without the novice losing rhythm, since many of its bows recycle the same tensions between Sam and Dean, and Dean’s anger is often treated as his superpower.. Ultimately, however, both of them, and Dean in particular, are saved by the message that caring for the hero is his strength, not his anger.. .

With all this in mind, it is not surprising that « Supernatural » attracts both sides of the political spectrum, although it is particularly popular among Democrats. In the 2020 edition of E-Poll Market Research’s annual list of best programs among viewers identified as Democrats and Republicans, it tops the list of Democrats’ favorite TV series, followed by « This Is Us ». Among the Republicans it ranked sixth. (« This is us » is not. 1. )

As the presidential election rages, Stacy Abrams teased her viewers by revealing that it was one of her favorite series, which makes sense again.. For one thing, she is the author of romance novels, and the show contains the same traits that revive the genre, including lost love, frustrated ambition, rivalry, and unrequited affection.. . Also, through its boundless wading through the rich darkness of urban legend, myth and magical traditions portray a « supernatural » version of justice that reflects reality to a greater degree.. The good guys have no illusions about fairness and work under the acceptance that any entity of all powers that might watch us is, in its best mood, absent.. In the final season, he is a bitter villain bent on wiping out all creatures and starting over.

This contrasts with the way most series focus on a Judeo-Christian vision of the cosmic order, with visions of righteous angels (similar to « The Highway to Heaven, » which Sam and Dean refer to repeatedly. God presents himself in the center of his being first as a writer, and then later, as he grows increasingly cruel, a generator of entertainment, and likens universes by showing that he is tired and decides to cancel. .

But « Supernatural » was never a religious fable. Based on the events of the penultimate episode, I would say that it defines, like most Americans, as spiritual, or perhaps strongly humanitarian..

Moreover, the more closely a person looked at the series, the more aware they were of just how intersecting the modern science fiction genre is, both in terms of its choice and the forces behind the scenes that shape it. The DNA strands for « Buffy », « Battlestar Galactica » and « The X-Files » are part of « Supernatural, » as in « The Magicians, » whose creator Sera Gamble was the host of « Supernatural » seasons 6 and 7, and the current « The Boys » series Kripke.

After 15 seasons and 327 episodes, Supernatural has ended as the longest running series of the genre to air in all US television broadcasts. . This places her in the same ranks as « CSI, » « ER, » and « Criminal Minds, » which also lasted for 15 years each.. The only other series currently airing for a longer period are « Grey’s Anatomy » (17 seasons), « NCIS » (18) and « Law & Order: SVU » (22)..

All of these are procedural dramas, and it’s a solid coordination that produces in the right hand the kind of television that anyone can download to at any time, no matter how long they are absent. This means that for absolutely exemplary reasons, Supernatural will continue to rotate television for years to come with its sharing services and live broadcasts – it consumes a lot of real estate.

As to why people can keep going back to it, this deserves a deeper reflection. Sam and Dean have matured and evolved alongside the people who watch them, and their separate journeys speak of the darkness accumulated within each of us and our wider culture..

The American Story insists that we are a people uniquely capable of benevolence, generosity, and perseverance. Recently American reality shows that the majority of us, as a nation, are only beginning to understand the terrible darkness lurking beneath the thin skin of alleged civility and claims of grandeur.. .

If there was a lesson in « Supernatural », perhaps there was really in front of us, all the time, to insist that whatever corrupts this earth must be confronted, counted, and banished, and only then can we rest. Until then, as the unofficial lead song insists, we have no other choice but to continue.

The end of the series « Supernatural » will premiere Thursday, November.. 19 at 9 p.m.. M. On The CW, it was preceded by the final special at 8 p.m.. M. The previous seasons and previous episodes of the current 15th season are broadcast on Netflix.
