Third One Day International – England v Australia – Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester – 16. September 2020 The Australian Mitchell Starc reacts. Reuters
Australia sealed the series 2-0 with their 51-run win in Sydney on Sunday, but Starc’s struggles have raised concerns that resulted in the four-test series from December. 17 in Adelaide.
Starc finished the game 0-82 of nine overs at the Sydney Cricket Ground two days after recording 1-65 in the opener on the same floor where he cashed in his first over 20 runs.
Finch said there would be discussion of how Starc could be used ahead of the dead rubber in Canberra on Wednesday, but he was unimpressed with the 30-year-old’s form.
« He wasn’t at his best and you have to understand that his standards are way higher than what you would expect from most other people because he’s been dominant for the past eight or nine years – especially in the US White ball formats.
« There will be some talk today about what we can do differently, if using it through the innings is a tactical thing.
Finch said the loss of opening partner David Warner to a groin injury is a blow to Australia and a replacement has yet to be determined.
Matthew Wade, who hasn’t been used before, could be brought in, he said, but the selectors could choose to promote wicketkeeper Alex Carey or Marnus Labuschagne, who battled for four depending on the pitch in the second ODI.
« He’s an all-time great in one day, T20 cricket, » Finch said of Warner. « Any team he doesn’t belong to will be a little weaker.
« But we have people who can get involved in this role too. «
