The US and UK Defense Ministers have officially signed an agreement in which their joint Participation in the deployment of the Queen Elizabeth Carrier Strike Group is set out this spring.
Together with the HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08), the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211, which flies the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter, will as well the USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) will be there on its first mission, according to both countries.

The Marines VMFA-211 were tapped to serve with the 617 squadron of the Royal Air Force « The Dambusters » in this « Carrier Strike 21 » mission. The US Marines help fill in the air wing until the UK has more squadrons. The Marines started with the airline in September and took part in a group exercise and a joint NATO warrior exercise in October, which culminated in a first declaration of operational capability of the carrier strike group on January 4.
During these exercises, the Sullivans and the Dutch frigate HNLMS Evertsen (F805) in the strike group as carrier companion.
Ships of the US Navy and the British Royal Navy have increasingly worked side by side and under the same command structure as the US operates more in the North Atlantic. Last year, Spain-based Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Donald Cook (DDG 75), USS Porter (DDG 78) and USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) operated alongside a rapid combat support ship in the Barents Sea in May USNS Supply (T-AOE-6) and HMS Kent (F-78).
In September, HMS Sutherland (F81) led a surface action group that included the USS Ross (DDG-71), the UK’s Royal Fleet Auxiliary RFA Tidespring (A136) and the royal Norwegian frigate HNoMS Thor Heyerdahl (F314) were among them. These arctic operations were intended to demonstrate increasing interoperability between the North Atlantic and Arctic navies in order to counter Russian naval operations. The upcoming deployment of the airlines will further advance the deployment of the SAG and give the officers of the British Royal Navy command of an even larger and more complex international naval formation.
The deployment is the first deployment of operational carriers for Great Britain since the decommissioning from HMS Illustrious (R06) in 2014 and the first fixed-wing jet aircraft deployed by a Royal Navy carrier since 2011.
