Colombia scored three goals in a stunning first half to beat Venezuela 3-0 and make an impressive start to their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign in Barranquilla

Venezuela are the only South American team to never reach the finals of the World Cup and they showed why in a disastrous 45-minute opening in a stadium without supporters on the Colombian coast

Duvan Zapata put the home side 1-0 after 16 minutes when he slipped and finished a delicious low cross from Juan Cuadrado

His Atalanta teammate Luis Muriel made two nine minutes later when he scored with a first shot from 10 meters

Muriel then secured third place for Colombia seconds before the whistle at half-time, when he made a quick counterattack

Colombia took their foot off the pedal in the second half, but Venezuela couldn’t have an impact and neither side could add to the score in a quieter 45-minute second

The top four teams in the 10-team South American group will automatically advance to the final in Qatar in 2022, and the fifth-ranked team will advance to the interregional qualifiers

Venezuela face Paraguay at home in their next match on Tuesday, while Colombia travel to Santiago to face Chile on the same day
