2020 was generally tough to say the least, but it was another lost year for the Detroit Lions. It was another overwhelming season for the organization, which was the third in a row. The past three seasons have had some things in common: Matthew Stafford at quarterback and Matt Patricia as head coach.

With the franchise shedding a toxic Patricia, Stafford’s future in Detroit remains in the balance.

Chief Detroit Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp mentioned that the organization would prefer its next general manager to have experience in the role. That being said, the Detroit Lions have interviewed both internal and external candidates led by ESPN analyst Louis Riddick with no prior management experience.

Before hiring former Lions linebacker Chris Spielman as a consultant, he was asked if he would be interested in an interview for the vacant general manager position. Another potential candidate with no management experience, Spielman decided to reject it, saying he would be better suited as a consultant for the time being but would be willing to learn and prepare for a potential opportunity, be it in Detroit or elsewhere. Spielman’s brother Rick was the general manager of the Minnesota Vikings from 2012 to date.

Ford Hamp and team president Rod Wood said they would conduct an extensive search that could take up to six weeks to exhaust all options before hiring. They have remained true to their word on this front.

In the past few days, the Detroit Lions have begun interviewing senior management candidates, including Rick Smith, Thomas Dimitroff and Scott Pioli.

At this point, Dimitrov seems to be the early favorite. The former Atlanta Falcons boss has put together a Super Bowl-tied Atlanta squad that would be historically difficult for the New England Patriots to have after a 28-3 lead in 2017. This epic breakdown does not affect GM, but ultimately head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

While Shanahan led the 49ers to the Super Bowl last season only to find themselves on the wrong side of the result despite their fourth quarter lead, both Quinn and Dimitroff got into the after a lackluster 5-0 start Super Bowl sacked 2020 season.

I have stated in the past that Rick Smith would be a tremendous job after knowing his rich early design history during his days in the Houston Texans. Smith ended up J. . J. . Watt, DeShaun Watson, Jadeveon Clowney and DeAndre Hopkins.

Pioli spent four years as the GM of Kansas City Cheifs, but his track record is less than impressive. The former KC GM will be most remembered for handing the keys to Matt Cassel on offense and Todd Haley as the team’s head coach. Neither did so well. However, Pioli designed the safety of stars Eric Berry.
