United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday deplored the « heartbreaking milestone » in the global death toll from COVID-19 of over two million and lamented the fact that « solidarity in the global response to the virus is failing » / p>
« Today we see a vaccine vacuum, » said the UN chief. « Vaccines are quickly reaching high-income countries while the world’s poorest have none at all. »
Without naming names, Guterres criticized the fact that « some countries pursue side business and even procure beyond needs ».
« Governments have a responsibility to protect their people, but the vaccine is defeating itself and will delay a global recovery, » he added. « COVID-19 cannot be beaten in every country. »
He said priority must be given to those who are « on the front lines: humanitarian personnel and high-risk populations ».
At a press conference, the President of the UN General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, announced that he and Guterres will both be vaccinated very soon. The UN chief will receive the shot next week, the President of the General Assembly on February 2nd.
That’s because New York, where the UN headquarters is located, has a public health policy that shoots people over the age of 65, Bozkir said.
