The Lakers have just added some depth to the midst by adding one of the free agency’s greatest men: Marc Gasol

After the Los Angeles Lakers made room with JaVale McGee’s paycheck to the Cleveland Cavaliers, they struck a deal to establish one of the NBA Free Agency’s premier centers. According to multiple reports, Marc Gasol will follow in the footsteps of his older brother Pau and become Laker:

Marc Gasol signs a deal with the Lakers, as sources and @ZachLowe_NBA tell me.

Free agent Marc Gasol has agreed to a deal with the Lakers, the source said @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.

The Lakers only have the $ 2. 7M Veteran Minimum Exemption. The move helps clear money towards the hard cap but doesn’t give more money on gasoline. The Lakers have already used the $ 9. 3M midlevel and $ 3. 6M semi-annual exception.

The reasons for the McGee deal are second year on gasoline deal. Signing a one-year contract would have been $ 1. Hit 6M cap. By signing a two-year contract, LAL takes on the full US $ 2. 6M hits. A difference of 1 million. USD can be quite helpful when dealing with the hard cap.

The Lakers first showed interest in Gasol – which they designed in 2007, but traded rights before they ever signed – on the agency’s first night after Dwight Howard left for the Philadelphia 76ers. Then they began to investigate how they could trade McGee to make room for his signature, and within hours they had found a deal that would allow them to get the seven-foot Spaniard to Los Angeles.

Now that he’s wearing a Lakers uniform, Gasol can instantly deliver some of the physicality the Lakers lost when Howard left, and is a skilled and creative passerby who will help the Lakers with his offensive skills as well. Even if it’s not what it was on both ends of the floor, it’s still very, very good.

Gasoline average 7. 5 points and 7. 3 rebounds in 26th. 4 minutes per competition last season, all while shooting 38. 5% from the depth to 3. 4 attempts per game. He hasn’t lost much in defense either, as his defensive box is plus-minus of 2. 8 was the second best of his career, and other advanced metrics still love him on both ends.

We have yet to see exactly how much the Lakers give him, but given their current cap situation, this should be a market value deal that will give them a player who is a clear upgrade for McGee – and probably Howard as well. This is another move that will make the Lakers better on paper in an off-season, and another great hit for Rob Pelinka as he gets his squad ready to defend his title.
