This wasn’t a Greek Odyssey to Perth, in the end, a tragedy for Allan Campbell’s Motherwell, but the Steelmen could still consider themselves a little lucky to get a point out of McDiamird Park.

After the guests were robbed of their young star by his Athens-caused absence, it was a match where the drama was more off the field than on Scottish football, and it got caught up in yet another debacle that turned into Homer’s epic story Would be home.

There were fleeting moments of joy, nothing more than Mark O’Hara’s fine prelude, but it was St. Johnstone, who had to regret the question of what could have been, since he couldn’t build on Stevie May’s equalization from the start.

Unsurprisingly, Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson had only one thing on his mind after the game when he complained that Campbell and Barry Maguire were identified as close ties by international service on their return home.

« We had named the team and were ready to go, but the manager [Alan Burrows] told me in a phone call around 11am that the two boys [Campbell and Barry Maguire] couldn’t play, » said the Northern Irishman. « It’s also a double punishment they can’t play next week.

“I know other clubs found out about it early on Friday, so communication was bad, really bad. It has to be better to go into an elite environment – supposedly.

« I was told that an employee tested positive and then the players were not retested before they flew on two flights.

« It’s not my problem if it didn’t affect Motherwell, but it is bad today. Allan Campbell is arguably my best player and I miss two of my three midfielders.

“It can be done better. I usually don’t try to jump on people as it’s difficult. But communication was a joke. ”

You would not have known this was an exhausted Motherwell Eleven when O’Hara finished a wonderful flowing move to the right to open the standings. The exchange had a touch of Scottish magic, Stephen O’Donnell and Tony Watt pulling Scott Tanser and Jamie McCart out of position to create a Liam Polworth-shaped hole in the box. His attempt was blocked, but O’Hara pounced on Zander Clark.

This was less than 20 minutes in, but still the contempt of St. Johnstone audible. They were the better team in the opening phase, full of verve and verve in midfield and eagerly followed the hesitation of their guests in the background.

While the Saints fought, visitors had Aaron Chapman to thank as he shot off his line to block a raging Craig Conway, and Devante Cole later showed up in his own box to thwart David Wotherspoon on the turn.

The guests’ determination finally collapsed just minutes before half-time when the Canadian winger teasingly nudged the ball between May and Bevis Mugabi and the defender nibbled at the bait just enough to bring the striker down. May got up to dispatch the penalty with serenity.

It seemed like the Saints were really on the rise now, but a nasty fall from Murray Davidson seemed to take something of their momentum. While they scored a goal on a stretcher minutes after leaving the field of play, he was undoubtedly part of the driving force alongside Ali McCann and his energy was lacking in a quieter second half.

The loss of the brilliant Conway to an unfortunate fall after the break also added little to the saint’s indictment.

They had the best chance when Jason Kerr and Conway got close with headers and had to wrestle Chris Kane’s savage blow with the last kick of the ball into the evening sky. For Callum Davidson, however, the condition of his midfielder was his most pressing concern.

« He [Davidson] fell awkwardly and I can’t say much more than that, » said the Saint’s chief. « It’s more than a dislocated shoulder, but I don’t know myself. Craig broke his nose.

“We started well and got good areas. We pressed well in the middle of the field and then received a counterattack.

“Ali [McCann] was the one who was on the ball, trying to do things. He did his chores and found him excellent. ”
