The World Cup winner suffered cardiac arrest just weeks after undergoing major surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
The legendary striker suffered a reported cardiac arrest at his Tigre home on Wednesday, where he was recovering from recent brain surgery.
Paramedics were called to his home for treatment, but the football icon could not be revived and confirmation of his death came soon, the Associated Press reported.
Maradona was born on Jan.. He was hospitalized on November 11th and had a procedure to remove a blood clot from his brain the following day. On 12. However, on November 1st, he was released to continue his recovery at home.
Doctors confirmed that Maradona required treatment for alcohol addiction in the days following his surgery, which was diagnosed with abstinence side effects. He had previously suffered from drug and alcohol problems during his career.
The Argentine Football Association paid tribute to Maradona after the news of his death was confirmed with the headline: “Goodbye Diego. You will be forever in every heart of the soccer planet. ”
Maradona is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup triumph in one of four appearances at the global tournament between 1982 and 1994.
He also became famous for his « Hand of God » goal against England in the 1986 quarter-finals, in which he threw the ball over the head of English goalkeeper Peter Shilton after he had hit him with his hand in an unnoticed incident the game officer.
Maradona competed for Argentinos Juniors before joining Boca Juniors on the first of two spells with the team. After just one full season with the club, he moved to Barcelona for a then world record fee of £ 5million, where he helped the team to a Copa del Rey title and a Spanish Supercup and was applauded from the field by rivals during El Clasico from Real Madrid.
After two seasons in Spain, Maradona moved to Napoli, where he helped the Italian team secure two titles in Serie A and the Coppa Italia as well as the Uefa Cup in 1988/89.
After a brief stint at Seville, Maradone returned to Argentina with Newell’s Old Boys before ending his career at Boca, where he retired in 1997.
But it was his international record that defined his legacy: 34 goals in 91 games for his country, including the famous 1986 World Cup victory.
His death sparked immediate honors and condolences from the football world, including former England captain Gary Lineker, who immediately posted the news on social media.
« Reports from Argentina that Diego Armando Maradona has died, » said Lineker, who faced Maradona in the famous 1986 World Cup quarter-finals. “By far the best player of my generation and probably the greatest of all time. After a blessed but troubled life, hopefully he will finally find some comfort in the hands of God. #RipDiego ”.
Compatriot Osvaldo Ardiles, who joined Maradona in the 1082 World Cup squad, said: “Thank you, dear Dieguito, for your friendship, for your football, great, without comparison. Easily the best soccer player in the history of soccer. So many great moments together. It is impossible to say which one was the best. RIP my dear friend. ”
Asif Kapadia, director of the 2019 documentary, which was titled after the great Argentine title itself, said, “I can’t quite believe DM is gone. Difficult to work with. He always seemed indestructible. I had 10 hours with the man !! I touched his left foot. We did our best to show the world the man, the myth, the fighter that he was. The greatest #legend. ”
