Rice was fired from the Chelsea academy system at the age of only 14 and is now the subject of blues interest after his heyday at West Ham United
West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice has admitted that the sacking of Chelsea at the age of 14 was the best thing that could have happened to him.
Heavily linked with a blues return to the blues this summer, Rice was released from the West London-based club as a teenager.
The England international previously admitted screaming his eyes out after being fired from the Chelsea Academy.
Back in 2014, Rice was rated not good enough by representatives of the Blues Academy before he was tried in West Ham – where he was noticed.
The now 21-year-old was promoted to the Hammers’ youth team before making his first team debut at the end of the 2016/17 season.
Chelsea may ruin their decision to leave Rice out of the club. Six years later, reports suggest they want to sign the versatile Englishman again – and West Ham is said to want £ 80m for his services.
Looking back on his release from Stamford Bridge, Rice believes that it turned out to be a man.
When asked by Sky Sports whether Chelsea let him go at 14, the best thing that could have happened, Rice said, « I think so. I think that’s what makes me be honest with you.
« I had to go to West Ham when I was 14, away from my family. I am a family boy, love my mother and father, live at home with them and leave them at 14 to play with people I don’t know Monday through Friday. I think that’s what shaped me into who I am.
« I had to start being responsible for myself, but look, I came here and was thriving. I had three managers who really looked after me. I love life here. «
Rice has previously played both in the center of iron defense and in midfield.

However, the latter is what he’s got used to over the course of his time at London Stadium – and it’s also the position he’d like to continue playing, he has confirmed.
« 100% – I’ve played in midfield for the past three seasons, » said Rice when asked if midfield would be his future position.
« A lot of people get carried away with what I’m supposed to do. I can get in in the middle but I think I have a lot more to give and I think my confidence in midfield is growing.
« I’ve watched the top players, the (Patrick) Vieiras, the Yaya Toures. Every time they see some space they have stumbled upon it and look powerful. ”
