Ulster Camogie has referred an incident to the Sports Federation following a Junior All Ireland Final.
Armagh Camogie strongly denied suggestions that a video clip recorded over the weekend showed people associated with the team singing a pro-IRA song.
A clip posted on Instagram over the weekend shows people in a dressing room opening a bottle of champagne while apparently singing « ooh ah, up the ra ». .
A statement from Armagh Camogie said they rejected any suggestion that there be an IRA chant after the match.
« What they sang was Armagh. Armagh County Camogie is a sports organization and is not affiliated with any political organization. ”
A statement from Ulster Camogie said it was “after the All-Ireland Junior Championship final on Saturday 5th. December, was made aware of allegedly inappropriate behavior.
« We have referred the matter to the Camogie Association and currently have no further comments. ”
The Ulster Unionist Council for Armagh, Sam Nicholson, expressed disgust at the idea of sectarian chanting.
« There is no doubt that this was a great sporting performance by the team and deserved a retreat from the team that just had a historic win at Cavan, » he said.
“However, any glorification of terrorism spread through social media sends a very negative message not only to the union community but to everyone who has been affected by IRA terrorism during the problems.
« It is particularly disappointing because any pro-IRA chants that clearly glorify terrorism show no thoughts or empathy for the victims of terrorism or the crime that would cause them. ”
He continued: “Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. In July 2019, members of the Tyrone Senior Men’s Panel were seen on social media hurling sectarian abuse at accordion bands in Aughnacloy. ”
