World news – UFC 2021 News: UFC 260, Alexander Volkanovski vs Brian Ortega canceled, coronavirus logs, date, full card

The featherweight title fight between reigning champions Alexander Volkanovski (22-1) and Brian Ortega (15-1, one without competition) does not take place at UFC 260.

The news was confirmed in an announcement during the UFC Vegas 22 broadcast on Sunday morning [AEDT].

The Australian was pulled off the card due to COVID-19 protocols and the UFC has yet to set an appointment known for a rescheduled fight.

The fight was supposed to be Volkanovski’s second title defense after overthrowing Max Holloway to win the featherweight championship before later defeating a rematch.

After a dominant decisive win over Calvin Kattar told Dana White that Holloway would get the next title shot against the winner of the clash between Volkanovski and Ortega.

Volkanovski had previously spoken of silencing his critics who doubted his second win over Holloway but continued to stand up focused solely on Ortega.

Now both his fight with Ortega and his possible trilogy fight with Holloway have to wait.

It’s a cruel blow to Volanovski and a reminder of the brutal reality for Australian and New Zealand athletes trying to survive in this day and age, as ESPN journalist Ariel Helwani explained.

« Feel for everyone Athletes whose bouts have been canceled at the last minute due to COVID, but I especially feel for the Australian / New Zealand athletes, « he tweeted.

» Imagine walking through an entire camp, flying to America, the fight is canceled and now you have to go home and quarantine for two weeks. «

The UFC 260 featherweight title fight this coming weekend between Masters Alex Volkanovski and Brian Ortega was, according to the broadcast, due to COVID logs called off. No makeup date announced.
