PARIS, France – Former World No27 Laura Siegemund roared through the last six games of the first set en route to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the 2017 Roland Garros quarter-final Kristina Mladenovic

Freshly winning the US Open women’s doubles title with Vera Zvonareva, the unranked German followed the former 10 5-1 before turning the storyline impressively before advancing in two hours and two minutes under the roof of Court Philippe-Chatrier

Mladenovic and Siegemund have played their fair share of epics over the years, most notably at the 2017 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, where the German won a thrilling final to claim the biggest title of her career

The two-time Roland Garros women’s doubles champion avenged defeat at the Mutua Madrid Open last spring, and was in song early against her veteran opponent, beating twice to lead 5-1 in less than 30 minutes thanks to seven winners

Siegemund, who hadn’t won back-to-back games since the tour’s COVID-19 lockdown ended, quickly lost service set point after making a bold attempt to launch

Wow what an honor to call us GRAND SLAM champions! 🙏🏽🏆🎾❤️✨ We put everything we had in every point, every game this week and were rewarded with the victory at the end 🏆✨🇺🇸 What a feeling of joy & pride for us, our performances, our teams and our families support us – not just yesterday, but on the long journey to this day The road to success like this is never easy – even if it looks like this from the outside And I am grateful for the people who continually walk by my side through the hard times, the lows to get to such heights with me Especially my boyfriend and coach @antony_pumpkin who supports me no matter what and who was the loudest (and for the most the only one) in our box ❤️ But most of our supporters had to stay in the background in their house unfortunately, they still play an important role in this achievement and I want to thank them here! A big thank you also to @usta and @usopen for making this event happen during these trying times and for giving us the opportunity to be back on the court competing against each other at its highest. level Thanks to my partner @verazvonareva for teaming up with me! His journey is inspiring and I am happy to be at his side to share a great return 💪🏽 #teamzvonarevasiegemund #grandslamchampions #usopenchamps # usopen2020 #happy #winners #teamsiegemund #sweet #victory #bettertogether

An unlikely retaliation ensued as Siegemund saved seven set points – five in a titanic ninth game alone – to close the gap on Mladenovic and win six straight games to sweep the set

The former world number 27 came out of a trade of breaks that started the second set, and although Mladenovic struggled for a long sixth game, Siegemund eventually managed to break through and served the game in his first opportunity

All in all, it was an aggressive display from the German, who hit 37 winners with 30 unforced errors – against Mladenovic’s 13-27 differential – and converted five of 10 point chances stoppage while winning 60% of the points behind his first serve

Next up is the winner of the first round meeting between Non19 seeded Alison Riske and former Wimbledon semi-finalist Julia Goerges, who will meet later on Tuesday
