World News – UA – PM announces new High Court judges, including daughter of former chief justice

Government says Jacqueline Gleeson and Simon Steward will become new High Court judges, ahead of two sitting judges retire in coming months

The daughter of a former Chief Justice of the High Court and a former Melbourne tax lawyer will be the two new faces at the High Court

Current Federal Court judges Jacqueline Gleeson and Simon Steward will replace outgoing judges Virginia Bell and Geoffrey Nettle

Justice Gleeson is currently in the Federal Court in Sydney, while Justice Steward sits in the Federal Court in Melbourne

« They are exceptional judges, they are exceptional members of Australia’s legal community and wider, » said Attorney General Christian Porter

« It is not really possible to make her Honor Judge Gleeson without specifying that she is the eldest daughter of former High Court Chief Justice Murray Gleeson, » he said

Judge Bell’s birthday is not until March of next year, with new Judge Gleeson taking her seat on the High Court earlier this month

Justice Steward had a relatively low profile outside the law, with his focus on tax law

But he’ll be in good company on the bench, having worked alongside current judge Michelle Gordon when the two were at the bar.

Justice Gleeson had a much more varied career and a much higher public profile, including being briefed on the Canberra bushfire litigation which included over 100 plaintiffs, and was the largest civil case in the ‘ACT at the time

She also represented Alan Jones in the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) ‘Cash-for-Comment’ investigation and subsequently joined the ABA as General Counsel

« Every judge appointed to the High Court bears a heavy burden to uphold the laws of our country, » he said

The appointment of not one but two new judges is an opportunity for Mr. Wear its imprint on the future court for a long time to come

But the process contrasts sharply with similar exercises in the United States where Supreme Court appointments are competing tooth and nail in a politically charged atmosphere
