Despite promises by police not to spy on Victorian backyards, a prominent civil liberties group has dropped plans to use drones in AFL grand finale day
Melburnians are not allowed to invite friends or family to visit their home to watch Saturday’s Richmond-Geelong decision maker, while area Victorians can only have two people plus dependents
Deputy Commissioner Luke Cornelius has confirmed that police will use drones to monitor illegal public gatherings and insists they « will not fly over people’s backyard pizza ovens »
But Liberty Victoria Vice President Julia Kretzenbacher is still not convinced their use would be « proportionate » with COVID-19 health guidelines
It comes as a coronavirus outbreak in north Melbourne has forced 500 people into quarantine, closed two schools and left five suburbs on high alert
Victoria recorded five new cases on Thursday, all linked to the outbreak of 36 cases in the northern suburbs, and no further deaths
Authorities had been monitoring the outbreak for a fortnight and considered it contained until a 5th year student attended East Preston Islamic College while infectious
They should have self-isolated as they were in close contact with a positive case, Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said
The school was closed for deep cleaning, as was the nearby Dallas Brooks Elementary School after close contact was identified there
Four hundred primary or secondary contacts were asked to isolate, as were 120 other people from a social housing block after a resident tested positive
It is hoped that all residents of the Broadmeadows housing block will be tested and have their results within 48 hours
The state’s death toll remains at 817 and the national figure at 905, with just one death last week
Meanwhile, a staff member from the Victoria Department of Health is now under police investigation into a leak of the state’s COVID-19 roadmap that the Prime Minister initially called of « obsolete »
