The McGowan government today signed a historic Indigenous title settlement agreement with the traditional owners of the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve that will provide economic resources, social and cultural benefits for Indigenous communities in the region
Indigenous Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt and Environment Minister Stephen Dawson today met with traditional owners to sign the agreement in Mina Mina, near Patjarr, in the Gibson Desert
The Gibson Desert Nature Reserve Clearance and Lurrtjurrlulu Palakitjalu Settlement Agreement covers an area of approximately 18,900 square kilometers
Lurrtjurrlulu Palakitjalu translated into English means « we will do it together », reflecting the intention of the state government and the traditional owners to jointly manage the country covered by the reserve
Under the agreement, the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve will be renamed with a traditional indigenous name – Pila Nature Reserve
« Pila » describes the dominant geography of the reserve area, which, translated into English, means plains / flat land
The Pila Nature Reserve will be jointly invested with the Warnpurru Aboriginal Corporation and the Conservation and Parks Commission, and will be jointly managed for conservation and cultural values under a joint management agreement
Settlement package sets aside $ 7.5 million over 10 years to support joint management activities on the reserve, providing meaningful work and training opportunities for traditional owners of Patjarr, Warburton and surrounding communities
In addition, the settlement program will provide funding to improve infrastructure within the community of Patjarr to support joint management activities
Recognizing the importance of recognizing their traditional rights and cultural responsibility for the reserve, the agreement includes a commitment to work with traditional owners to achieve recognition of Aboriginal title over the area of the reserve
The Agreement resolves the responsibility of the State Government arising from the extinction of indigenous title through the creation of the reserve in 1977
The Agreement represents an important achievement for both parties, in particular the traditional owners who have strived for a very long time to obtain recognition of their traditional property in the country covered by the reserve
« All those who have worked so hard to reach this day appreciate the importance of signing this agreement to jointly manage the Pila Nature Reserve
« This will not only bring positive economic and social benefits to traditional owners, but also a just result that all Western Australians should be proud of »
« Today is a historic day for the Warnpurru Aboriginal Corporation and the state government, who will work together to jointly manage the reserve
“I am pleased that the rights and interests of traditional owners are now recognized by the reserve which is jointly vested in the Warnpurru Aboriginal Corporation, and that the area will be renamed Pila Nature Reserve, to reflect the traditional language and culture. importance
« The McGowan government is listening to the traditional owners of WA and is working hard to build stronger and better partnerships through the signing of agreements and supported joint management arrangements. through initiatives such as our Native Ranger Program and Plan for Our Parks «
