Indigenous Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt and Environment Minister Stephen Dawson today met with traditional owners to sign the agreement in Mina Mina, near Patjarr, in the Gibson Desert

The Gibson Desert Nature Reserve Clearance and Lurrtjurrlulu Palakitjalu Settlement Agreement covers an area of ​​approximately 18,900 square kilometers

Lurrtjurrlulu Palakitjalu translated into English means « we will do it together », reflecting the intention of the state government and the traditional owners to jointly manage the country covered by the reserve

Under the agreement, the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve will be renamed with a traditional indigenous name – Pila Nature Reserve

« Pila » describes the dominant geography of the reserve area, which, translated into English, means plains / flat land

The Pila Nature Reserve will be jointly invested with the Warnpurru Aboriginal Corporation and the Conservation and Parks Commission, and will be jointly managed for conservation and cultural values ​​under a joint management agreement

Settlement package sets aside $ 7.5 million over 10 years to support joint management activities on the reserve, providing meaningful work and training opportunities for traditional owners of Patjarr, Warburton and surrounding communities

In addition, the settlement program will provide funding to improve infrastructure within the community of Patjarr to support joint management activities

Recognizing the importance of recognizing their traditional rights and cultural responsibility for the reserve, the agreement includes a commitment to work with traditional owners to achieve recognition of Aboriginal title over the area of ​​the reserve

The Agreement resolves the responsibility of the State Government arising from the extinction of indigenous title through the creation of the reserve in 1977
