After decades of battling the Blue Oval on Australian circuits, the Holden Commodore will be replaced by GM’s Camaro to take on Ford’s Mustang in 2022 Supercar Season

A Gen3 Supercar competitor, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will take on the Ford Mustang, the car in which DJR Penske star Scott McLaughlin has won the last three championships

Supercars boss Sean Seamer says the new vehicles will once again become more closely aligned to a road car and include a range of new design features

« We are delighted to welcome an all new racing car design to the track in 2022, » he said

« The cars will retain their V8 engine format to ensure they are fast and loud, but they will be ‘hybrid ready’ and look more like the road cars they are based on

« These are incredible race cars that give a nod to the Supercar of the past, with as much attention to the design and appearance of the cars as to new technology »

Triple Eight, led by legendary seven-time champion Jamie Whincup, will move from Commodores to Camaros

The Commodores will remain on the Supercars grid next season, but not in an official capacity, with General Motors retiring Holden at the end of this year

« We loved every minute of our 51 year involvement through Holden, » said Kristian Aquilina, General Motors Australia Managing Director

« There will never be another Holden, but we now welcome Camaro to the stage and hopefully a whole new generation of fans with »
