World news – Trees fall, power out as a heavy storm lashes the coast

Evening thunderstorms hit areas of the Sunshine Coast, with strong winds and rain that cut branches and cut power.

UPDATE: 7:00 p.m.: Power outages have been reported across the coast as the region continues to be hit by a severe thunderstorm.

Branches were torn down and houses hit when the storm brought heavy rain and noxious winds and hit the southern end of the coast around 6 p.m.

As of 6:15 p.m., at least 350 properties in Pelican Waters, Bells Creek, Corbould Park, Glass House Mountains, Meridan Plains, and Beerburrum had been hit by blackouts.

The weather bureau warned that severe thunderstorms were also detected on radar near Maroochydore and Kenilworth at 6:30 p.m.

The thunderstorms were moving northeast and should hit the waters off Maroochydore by 7:00 p.m. and head towards Pomona by 7:30 p.m.

The meteorological office warned of damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash floods.

UPDATE: 3:30 p.m.: Sunshine Coast residents have been warned to prepare for severe weather as thunderstorms are emerging at the southern end of the region.

The Meteorological Bureau issued a severe weather warning shortly after 3 p.m., indicating that storms moving north towards the coast are expected to hit the Bribie Island area shortly after 4 p.m.

« Harmful winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that can lead to flash floods are likely, » the warning said.

The alert was issued to people in Redland City and parts of Ipswich, Logan, Scenic Rim, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane City, and Moreton Bay Council.

EARLIER: Sunshine Coast residents have been urged to keep an eye on the radar this weekend as severe thunderstorms will hit the area.

Weather bureau meteorologist Matt Marshall said there was a possibility that severe thunderstorms could hit the region from late Saturday afternoon.

« Storms are definitely on our agenda this afternoon on the Sunshine Coast, » said Marshall.

He said residents should be prepared for the possibility of large hailstones, noxious winds and heavy rains.

« We would like to urge people to keep an eye on the radar and the warning page as we will be giving warnings throughout the day if necessary. »

He said the storms would likely develop over the Gold Coast hinterland, Brisbane and Ipswich before moving north to the coast for a break from the heat.

Mr Marshall said the entire Sunshine Coast from south to Noosa should be prepared for the chance of an afternoon storm on Saturday.

« It’s pretty warm today, but the coast will see a break from the heat, » he said.

« Today there is a nice, cool change on the way, and tomorrow and Monday it will be a little cooler. »

With a rain probability of 50 percent, the Sunshine Coast should have up to 6 mm of precipitation on Saturday, with temperatures reaching 33 ° C.

Potential thunderstorms were expected to hit the coast again on Sunday afternoon as the temperature dropped to 27 ° C before rising back to 29 ° C on Monday.
