World news – Today in History: FDR, only US President who holds more than two terms in office, dies

Today is Monday, April 12th, the 102nd day of 2021. There are still 263 days in the year.

On April 12, 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral haemorrhage in Warm Springs, Georgia, aged 63. He was succeeded by Vice President Harry S. Truman.

The Civil War began in 1861 when the Confederate Forces opened fire on Fort Sumter, South Carolina.

In 1877, the catcher mask was first used in a baseball game by James Tyng of Harvard in a game against the Lynn Live Oaks .

In 1961, the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man to fly in space and orbited the earth once before landing safely.

In 1963, civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and imprisoned in Birmingham, Alabama. He was charged with disobeying the court and performing without permission. (During his time behind bars, King wrote his « Letter from Birmingham Prison ».)

In 1981, the Space Shuttle Columbia took off from Cape Canaveral on its first test flight. Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, 66, died in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 1988 the US Patent and Trademark Office of Harvard University granted a patent for a genetically modified mouse. For the first time a patent was granted for an animal life form.

Former boxing champ Sugar Ray Robinson died in 1989 at the age of 67 in Culver City, California. Radical activist Abbie Hoffman was found dead at his home in New Hope, Pennsylvania at the age of 52.

At its first session in 1990, the first democratically elected East German parliament recognized responsibility for the Nazi Holocaust and asked forgiveness for Jews and others who had suffered.

In 2009, American cargo ship captain Richard Phillips was rescued by US Navy snipers from Somali pirates who shot three of the hostage-takers. Angel Cabrera was the first Argentine to win the Masters.

In 2015, Hillary Rodham Clinton returned to presidential politics and announced in a video her long-awaited second campaign for the White House. Jordan Spieth raged with a record performance at the Masters for his first major championship, shooting an 18-under-270 to become the first wire-to-wire green jacket winner since 1976.

Ten years ago: Japan ranked considered its nuclear crisis most severe internationally – on the same level as the 1986 Chernobyl disaster – despite insisting that radiation leaks at its tsunami-crippled nuclear power plant be reduced. The state of Ohio executed two-time murderer Clarence Carter for beating and trampling a fellow inmate in jail. Roaring cannons, plaintive music and muffled crowds ushered in the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War during morning ceremonies in Charleston, South Carolina.

Five years ago: Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told 1,500 Marines and Sailors at camp Pendleton, Calif., That the Pentagon’s decision to have women fight for all military combat positions is as irreversible as previous decrees to integrate blacks and allow gays and lesbians to serve openly. Actress Anne Jackson, who often appeared on stage with her husband Eli Wallach in comedies and classics, died in New York at the age of 90. David Gest, music producer and former husband of Liza Minnelli, died in London at the age of 62.

One year ago: Christians around the world celebrated Easter Sunday, which was isolated from the coronavirus in their homes. St. Peter’s Square was barricaded to keep the crowds out.
