A new trend recently adopted by TikTok and it’s unexpectedly simple: baked feta with tomatoes, swirled with pasta.
The viral recipe that apparently goes back to a 2019 video by Finnish food blogger Jenni Häyrinen , involves dipping tomatoes seasoned with olive oil, salt, and pepper in a baking dish with a full block of feta cheese in the middle, covering, and cooking it until the feta melts. Next, add garlic, basil, and red pepper flakes, mix them with pasta and voila – you’ve baked TikTok’s hottest new trend.
Google searches for the hearty cheese dish known in Finnish as “uunifetapasta” has skyrocketed in recent days as more and more hunting dogs try the delicacy for themselves.
« It immediately went viral first on Instagram stories, » Häyrinen told Food52 via email. “The next weekend I had a three-day #uunifetapasta live on my Instagram stories and republished my followers’ creations. The newspapers picked it up and it wasn’t long before everyone in Finland was cooking it. “
The dish was such a hit in Finland that it becomes a reference in the TikTok videos, not to mention Finnish grocery stores are no longer selling feta due to the craze.
While the network is in Has inspired countless less-than-flavourful and downright dangerous trends over the years, People magazine reporter Shay Spence says this is actually pretty good.
The recipe « is as easy to make as it looks », he wrote, noting, « The feta is indeed very strong with this one. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t tasty – just that I think it’s more suitable as a side dish to a protein like chicken than as a whole meal for himself. «
He recommends peeling for a higher quality feta, as this is the main flavor of the dish. Add extra spices, including lemon peel and dried oregano, and remember to conserve your pasta water.
« It’s very easy to make, but also has a visually fascinating process and contains ingredients we are familiar with – Pasta, tomato and cheese aren’t exactly a groundbreaking combination – but with the twist of using hot, flavorful feta as opposed to say it, parmesan, ”he wrote.
For those who for some reason are not feeling feta, myriad other cheeses can be easily traded for them, with the bonus incentive of possible viral spin-off fame. A vegan spin-off version has more than 72,000 likes on TikTok.
The all-things goopy expert Gwyneth Paltrow and her brand also gave the trend a whirl and of course opted for sheep’s milk feta and “grain-free almond flour -Noodles « .
