The arrival of the Bidens and their dogs Major and Champ at the White House this week marks the return of a long-standing tradition – four-legged furry friends on the 18-acre estate where the US President lives .
Outgoing President Donald Trump became the first president since Andrew Johnson in the 1860s to not share the president’s excavation with a dog or cat – or even a raccoon like Calvin’s 1920s Coolidge.
Major, a German Shepherd, will be the first rescue dog to ever live in the White House. The Bidens adopted him from the Delaware Humane Association in November 2018. Champ, also a German Shepherd, joined the family in 2008.
« From the Delaware Humane Association’s shelter puppy to the first dog in the White House, Major Biden is proof that any dog can live the American dream, » said the group that hosted an online « Indoguration » fundraiser on January 17th to celebrate Major moving into the White House on January 20th.
Former President Barack Obama campaigned dogless, promised his daughters Sasha and Malia, however, during his acceptance speech after winning the 2008 election a puppy.
Bo, a Portuguese water dog, moved to the White House in April 2009, a gift from the late Senator Ted Kennedy. The Obamas adopted a second dog of the same breed, Sunny, in 2013, according to the Presidential Pet Museum.

Approximately 67 percent of all U.S. households had pets in 2019, up from 56 percent three decades ago, American Pet reported Products Association last year.
And the pandemic has given pet ownership another boost. Shelter adoptions rose about 15 percent as people turned to furry friends to deal with isolation from lock orders.
