A petition for adopters to have a right to their birth certificate has received over 17,000 signatures following the release of the Maternal and Baby Institutions report.

In the petition, the Founded by activist Izzy Kamikaze, it calls for a single paragraph to amend the Civil Registration Act to give adoptees the right to access their birth certificates.

The petition’s descriptions read: “The long-awaited release of the report of the Commission of Inquiry into Mother & Baby Homes has been of great concern to adopters and survivors of mother & baby homes because they have virtually failed to address the problems of adoptive children and of born mothers. «

» Signing this petition is a practical act of solidarity with adopted people and survivors, and is an opportunity to do something practical to help them now. «

The petition was posted in a Facebook post Shared by Adrienne Corless, daughter of Catherine Corless, the historian best known for her work in compiling information on child deaths at the Bon Secours mother and child home in Tuam, Galway.

In the Facebook post, Adrienne Corless said, that there is so much to deal with in relation to the final report.

« In one way: at least now we have the report, flaws and everything, » she said. « It’s enormous: Hundreds of pages of evidence and testimony, all thanks to the courage of those who helped. »

« I hope it has been healing to come forward and I hope that today’s apologies continue that process. «

» Mam was emptied and dejected, to say the least, so much so that Ryan Tubridy called her after seeing her on the 6 o’clock news, « she said .

She continued, « Adopted people are still waiting for laws to get access to their birth certificates. »

« There is no need for delays. As Claire Byrne said on her show today, they passed laws regarding banking overnight. “

» As an archaeologist, I still don’t understand why we need this new and seemingly comprehensive legislation to repeal it, and I don’t know any archaeologist I know.  »

« It’s going to be a terribly sad job, and only a few archaeologists will be able to do it – and as harrowing as it may be, in the scheme of things it’s not a massive job. » Archaeologists do that. «

» So there is no rest for either of us while the babies are still in septic tanks, « she said.

“You may have seen this picture of the baby shoe from the test dig. It haunts me. We can’t wait another year to get them out of there. «
