Usually the first week of the NFL season ends with a double header on Monday night. It has been the case for a few years.

Most fans seem to like it, although there are some who don’t, mainly because the second game usually starts pretty late on Monday nights.

According to Peter King NBC Sports’ Monday night week 1 football is lost. ESPN is getting something else in return, however.

It looks like ESPN will lose the second game of the double header of the first week on Monday night, but win an extremely valuable property this season: the week 18 double header on Saturday the January 8, 2022. What a deal. Over the past five years, Monday night nightcap has had a number of memorable encounters: Tennessee-Denver, Denver-Oakland, Rams-Oakland, Chargers-Denver, Rams-San Francisco (both teams are good) with relatively poor ratings. Now, ESPN will likely have a game on Monday night in the first week of normal MNF game time at 8:15 p.m. ET, with a double header to kick off week 18.

The Monday Night Football double header is a fun idea, but as King mentions, there are seldom two good games.
