A mural by Senator Bernie Sanders in Washington, DC, with a picture of Pepe the Frog in a suspected hate crime, was destroyed, police said.
The colorful artwork « Bern the System, » which appears on a Concrete wall painted under Interstate 395 on the 100 block of H Street in the city’s Navy Yard area was defaced sometime between December 15 and Thursday with the cartoon image adopted as the hateful meme by some veteran right-wing extremists, Police said.
Cops were called to the site on Saturday by one of the artists involved, who believed the vandalism « could be motivated by hatred or prejudice against political or religious affiliation, » according to one from The Post Police report received shows.
The artist was in the process of repairing the mural when officers replied. According to the police report, an investigation is currently underway into the « alleged hate crime, » which may be motivated by « anti-Jewish » sentiments.
Doron Ezickson, head of the Washington Office of the Anti-Defamation League, told the WTTG that the DC police had the Organization regarding the mural, which has since been repaired.
The artwork now appears to have a new sentence near Sander’s head that reads, « Hate has no home. »
Meanwhile, Ezickson said that it was the first time he saw pictures of Pepe the Frog in the Washington area, reported WWTG.
« The appropriation of this symbol somehow became an expression of power by the people who did it, and then It spread through the internet and various chat rooms, as well as 8chan and Reddit and some of the places where right-wing and white supremacists meet and exchange ideas and strategies, « said Ezickson.
