World news – The Irish striker’s 50th A-League goal seals Newcastle Jets’ maiden win of the season

A milestone goal by Roy O’Donovan was crucial as Newcastle Jets celebrated their first win of the 2020-21 A League season on their fifth attempt.

O’Donovan, who also set up Valentino Yuel’s opener, scored the second goal in the 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at the New Zealand team’s temporary home in Wollongong.

The 35-year-old Irish striker has now 50 goals in 108 games in in the top Australian league, in which he has been working since 2015.

O’Donovan now played in his second stint with the Jets for Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar during his time in the A-League. </ The former Cork City star helped his hometown club win the League of Ireland Premier Division title in 2005, before joining the English Premier League 18 months later when Roy Keane signed him to Sunderland.

He now has five fewer goals than Andy Keogh’s 55th, which puts the former Irish international at number 10 on the A-League list of all-time top scorers.

After stays in Saudi Arabia and India, he is Keogh, 34, is back in Australia for the new season after returning for the third time with Perth Glory.
