Doc Rivers, the Philadelphia 76ers coach, told reporters Wednesday that he believes « democracy will triumph » after a pro-Donald Trump mob overtook the United States Capitol while confirming the election of Joe Biden had.
« It is of course quite disturbing. Sad. But what is not, I keep hearing that this is an attack on democracy. It is not. Democracy will prevail. It always does, » said Rivers. « … I’m going to say it because I don’t think a lot of people want it. Can you imagine today if these were all black people storming the Capitol and what would have happened? That’s a picture to me that says more than a thousand words. «

Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Wednesday as Congress convened to confirm Biden’s choice to halt the process and force residents of the building to safe areas . An armed standoff took place at the door of the house and the mob later overtook the Senate. At least one intruder was pictured on the podium on which Vice President Mike Pence tried to confirm the election results earlier that day.
The violence came just hours after Trump appeared at a « Save America » event where he continued to perpetuate the lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen in Biden’s name. The rally and subsequent Capitol Overtaking takes place amid months of Trump undermining the integrity of the elections by spreading lies and refusing to admit his loss to the president-elect.
Rivers and the Sixers are due later on Wednesday night play in Philadelphia against the Washington Wizards.
There was no discussion between the league and NBPA about postponing today’s games after violating Capitol (Woj).
