World news – The band come together again to pay tribute to Biden’s prodigal son

The band that Joe Biden embraced after son Beau passed away will perform like no other at an inauguration.

Rock group The New Radicals will reunite for a single day in the US on Wednesday to perform as a tribute to Biden’s late son and a nod to Harris’ husband following the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

The short-lived Los Angeles group only dated from 1997 to 1999, but their single You Get What You Give hit the top 40 status in the US, hit the top 5 in the UK, and topped the charts in Canada and New Zealand.

During the battle with brain cancer that claimed Beau Biden’s life in 2015, the family recorded the song as an uplifting anthem, Joe Biden later wrote in his autobiography Promise Me, Dad.

The song seems to appeal to those going through difficult times and offers a message of hope. It ends with a call to oppose oppression by the indifferent and powerful.

Harris’ husband, attorney Doug Emhoff, chose it as his « walk-in » song for any public appearance during his wife’s 2020 campaign.

At the request of the Biden Harris team, the New Radicals agreed to reunite for the first time in more than 20 years.

They will perform during Wednesday’s « Parade Across America, » a virtual celebration that replaces the traditional opening parade due to the coronavirus pandemic and increased safety concerns, the organizing committee said.

« If there is one thing on earth that could possibly bring us to bring the band together, if only for a day, it is the hope that our song could be even the smallest beacon in such a dark time », said front man and group founder Gregg Alexander told Rolling Stone magazine.

« America knows in its heart that with a new government and a real plan for vaccines on the way, things will be bright again. That is the message of … This world will pull through. »

Lady Gaga will sing the Star-Spangled Banner, the US national anthem, after Biden and Harris are officially sworn in.

Another event in the evening will be Bruce Springsteen, the Foo Fighters, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato and Bon Jovi.

Security measures will also be unprecedented following the storming of the U.S. Capitol two weeks ago by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump, and given widespread fears of extremist violence on and before January 20.

With more National Guard troops in Washington DC than US soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan, the US Capitol is surrounded by a 20,000-strong force from six different states.

According to the US Constitution, the current term of office of the president ends on January 20th at 12:00 noon after an election when the new president and the new vice president are sworn in.

Apart from the swearing in of the new president, there are no set rules for the sequence of events. However, it is tradition to hold a parade through the Washington Mall, lunch at the Capitol with members of Congress, and a formal delivery of the White House to the Washington Mall outgoing First Family.

President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris are sworn in, followed by addressing a small crowd from a platform on the Western Front of the Capitol.

The stalls, which were overrun by rioters last week, were earmarked for seating in the crowd prior to the inauguration.

They will then lay a wreath and conduct a troop review at the Capitol before an escort of the President, drawn by each branch of the military, takes them to the White House.

There are no major public events or galas of any kind as the Biden government tells all Americans to stay home.

However, celebrities like Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Jon Bon Jovi, and Tom Hanks will also perform during the virtual events.

Americans are instead being encouraged to watch events from afar, as they were at the Democratic National Convention last year.

Joe Biden originally planned to take the two hours from his Wilmington, Delaware home on the Amtrak line, which he took every day of his 37 years as a Senator. However, this was dashed due to new security concerns and he was invited to spend the night before his inauguration at the Blair House in Washington DC.

Traditionally the new president spends the night of the 20th at the White House, but this is not necessary and there has been speculation that Mr Biden will return to Wilmington to ease the mess if there are more problems.

In the past, White House staff only had a few hours to bring all the belongings of the new First Family to the private residence and retrieve the outgoing President’s personal details.

Outgoing Vice President Mike Pence has also announced that he will be at Mr Biden’s swearing-in ceremony, a conciliatory move welcomed by the new administration.

With the theme « America United » there will also be a virtual television parade, which will be composed of representatives of all walks of life and « celebrate America’s heroes ».

There is no formal requirement for them to meet, and it is likely that Mr Trump will be in Washington DC after confirming last week that he will not be at the inauguration.

There will be no traditional galas or balls. Even before the January 6th mayhem, Team Biden urged everyone to stay home and not to gather in any way because of the pandemic.

« We know that opening balls and public parades are part of the opening tradition, » the Biden Inauguration Committee said in a statement.

« Given the current public health situation across the country, opening activities will have a limited footprint and events like the parade will be redefined. While the opening initiative will look different amid the pandemic, all activities will honor and resemble American opening traditions and Americans across the country are getting involved while everyone stays safe and healthy.  »

Members of the public were unable to purchase tickets and are being prevented from traveling to DC.

This guide has been in place for months due to COVID, but Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser once again urged people to stay away after last week’s violence.

Even so, members of Congress have bundles of tickets and important donors some, and the Harris / Biden campaign has sent out fundraising requests tied to a ticket lottery.
