World news – The 49ers promote Ryans, McDaniel, to fill coordinator jobs under Shanahan

Saleh will take passing coordinator Mike LaFleur to New York and leave McDaniel to lead the 49ers offensive with Shanahan.

Robert Saleh is leaving the San Francisco 49ers to head the New York Jets, taking with him game coordinator Mike LaFleur and offensive line coach John Benton.

The 49ers didn’t look far to fill those roles and promoted linebacker coach DeMeco Ryans to defensive coordinator, game coordinator Mike McDaniel to offensive coordinator, the 49ers confirmed. Chris Foerster is to be promoted to offensive coach, reports Michael Silver.

The new jet trainer Robert Saleh takes two offensive assistants from the Niners with him: the passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur (as OK) and the orienteering trainer John Benton (as orienteering trainer / running game coordinator) …

Head coach Kyle Shanahan hovered Ryan’s name as one on his list for promotion to defensive coordinator, while Saleh’s name swirled among the top contenders for one of the many vacant head coach jobs this season.

Ryans, 36, was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 and was named two Pro Bowls linebackers for the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles in his 10-year NFL. He joined the 49ers’ coaching staff as a defensive quality control coach and was promoted to inside linebacker coach in 2018.

“DeMeco is well spoken. He has a lot of respect from his players. He’s incredibly intelligent. He’s a sponge for knowledge, ”Saleh said of Ryans in December. “Even though he played in the league, I see him taking notes every day. Coach talks, he takes notes. I speak, he takes notes. DB coach talks, he takes notes.

« He’s an absolute sponge in that regard, » added Saleh. « It tells you that he won’t just take one system and leave; he will move on. Because of that, he has a good chance of moving on and becoming head coach one day. »

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw said Ryan’s experience as a top linebacker, I give him a unique coaching perspective.

« It’s a blessing and a curse, » Greenlaw said in December. « He knows everything that happens on the field like the back of his hand. He and Saleh are the leaders of the defense. Having played in that defense before, he knows what to expect and he does a good job of explaining what he wants from you.

« Everyone loves DeMeco because they will train you hard. Sometimes you may not like it, but it motivates you and also tells you if you are okay. »

McDaniel, 37, has been with Mike Shanahan’s Denver Broncos internship in 2005 and an offensive assistant for Shanahan’s Washington Football team in 2011 in the Shanahan coaching tree. He then worked alongside Kyle Shanahan as a wide-angle receiver trainer for the Atlanta Falcons, their offensive coordinator from 2015 to 2016, which included the Falcons’ 2016 Super Bowl appearance. The younger Shanahan brought McDaniel to San Francisco in 2017 as the team’s run game coordinator.

The 59-year-old Foerster came to the 49ers as a consultant from 2018 to 2019. He will reclaim the offensive line coaching job he did for the 49ers in the 2008, 2007 and 2015 seasons. He spent 2016-17 as the Miami Dolphins’ offensive coach and resigned when a controversial video surfaced online. In his 28-year NFL coaching career in 2004, Foerster was also the offensive coach for the Washington Football Team, Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and offensive coordinator for the Dolphins.
