Most of the second half attacked St. Johns. It penetrated the paint. It moved the ball.
With play on the line, the Johnnies went back to their performance in the first half when they settled for long jumpers and held the ball.
Koby McEwen’s left-handed banker at 27, 0 seconds ahead was the winner of the game as St. Johns failed to get a good shot in the final seconds, ruining an outstanding performance in the second half.
Rasheem Dunn isolated on top of the key and fed Vince Cole who did the Ball lost out of bounds by Marquette. After 1.5 seconds, Julian Champagnie had the ball in the right corner and his desperation was over, leading Marquette to a 73-71 win at Carnesecca Arena.
St. Johns only managed 2:57 in the final two points, the result of multiple stagnant possessions with little ball movement. The poor first half didn’t help either.
St. Johns was 11 a.m. behind after being mistreated. It was content to shoot from the area – and mostly to miss -. Of the Johnnies, 32 shots, 16 shots were 3-pointers, and only four of those were stamps. Marquette owned the colors, 20-8, and took advantage of the undersized St. John’s interior. Given that Champagnie was 1:10 for two points, St. Johns was lucky enough not to be further down.
St. Johns came out for the second half of a different team. It attacked relentlessly. It stopped being satisfied with jumping shots. It went to the edge. A 12-0 run by Champagnie turned a 10-point deficit into a 2-point lead. The golden eagles fought against the pressure of St. John’s, coughing the ball repeatedly on the back court and could not get on their offensive.
