Day 2 Recap: Skipper Joe Root finished his 18th century of testing to put England in front on a rain-hit second day of Friday’s opening game against Sri Lanka.
Root went from 99 to 100 with a lone weirdo, Dilruwan Perera, at the second ball after lunch when tourists hit Sri Lanka’s 135,207 for three in response. They led by 72 runs.
The star batsman, who had passed 12,000 runs in his first-rate morning career that started late due to rain, lifted his bat after reaching the landmark and hugged his partner Dan Lawrence, who hit 40.
Root, who made his debut against India in Nagpur in 2012, reached one hundred in 163 balls with the help of seven limits.
Previously, Sri Lanka had lost 135 points, and the English off -Spinner Dominic Bess took five wickets. Pacer Stuart Broad scalped three.
Dinesh Chandimal was the highest run-getter for Sri Lanka when he scored 28 out of 71 deliveries.
